You need to set the transducer lower. When at speed, the hull of the ship raises up out of the water and hence your transducer is probably not deep enough at these times to give a proper reading.

SOURCE: the depth digital read out
If you purchased it new, bring it back for an exchange. The transducer is what reads the depth, and is not operating correctly. I'm assuming you tried to adjust the depth tolerance in the menu options and also disconnected battery power and reconnected.

If you know someone that will let you try your unit on their hookup (same type unit) you may be able to isolate the problem to know if it is in the transducer or the unit. If you have the same results with a different hookup, then you would need to return your unit to our factory for a service check. If a different transducer corrects the problem, please contact me at the following email address and I can replace your transducer for you. email@example.com

The depth to which a fastener is driven is controlled by the depth adjustment
knob (A) Fig. 19 below. The depth of drive is factory adjusted to a nomimal setting.
Test fire a fastener and check depth. If
a change is desired, rotate the
adjustment knob (A) Fig. 19: the
adjustment knob has detents every 1/4
turn. Rotate the knob clockwise (see
Fig. 19), to increase the depth of drive,
rotate the knob counterclockwise to
decrease the depth of drive. Test fire
another fastener and check depth.
Repeat as necessary to achieve
desired results. The amount of air pressure required will vary depending on the
size of the fastener and the material being fastened. Experiment with the air
pressure setting to determine the lowest setting that will consistently perform
the job at hand. Air pressure in excess of that required can cause premature
wear and/or damage to the tool.
