What is the belt configeration for a Craftsman 917.254214 ride on mower?

This video shows several belt patterns for various mowers. I am assuming you are wanting the deck belt and not the drive belt. 4 seconds into the video is the standard craftsman 42 inch belt path. The belt at the bottom is put on the engine pulley. Tip from my own experince make sure that the belt is under the belt guides or you will ruin a belt in short order. Your model number is under the seat and is also a scanable barcode. Another tip is to snap a photo of your model numbers. This is handy when you need parts. More accurate and readable than writing it down. Riding Mower Deck Belt Diagram DIY

Show belt pattern on a Husqavarna cth151xp

Are your belt patterns located under the chassis, usually on left side foot rest location if you were to lay on ground and look upward at the bottom of chassis. Do you see a sticker showing the layout ?

MTD 42" zero turn transmission belt jumps left pulley on start

A little wd40 on each pulley arm assembly, make sure they move freely and good time to check the belt and belt brakes if equipped.
I assume your belt was recently removed or installed and is not following the correct pattern. Is this the issue ?
It's very common for people to install their belt around pulley in different direction and belt is not ( or is ) riding on the Idler pulley, other, or guides incorrectly.
Under the chassis somewhere is a label for belt pattern and is usually under the left side foot grip of the chassis.
( Lifting the mower ? )
Be sure to have some chunks of wood available. I use 2x4 and 2x6 scrap to hold up the machines without use of jackstands or any jack which causes damage.

Genuine belt too long for lace pattern used

Hi, I will try to help you or give you suggestions for your problem. If you have an OEM belt, it should fit. Try the install again and pay real close attention to the pattern that they give you. I found some patterns really difficult to lace and had to try over and over and finally got it. Your problem could be with the tensioner and idler pulley if you have both in your pattern. Check them out. The spring for belt tightening might be broken or something sticking in that assembly. Some have 2 belt tensioners, so if you do, take a real close look at them. Some systems have a fixed idler pulley that can be adjusted, so take a close look at each pulley you have in that pattern and make sure nothing is sticking. You might as well oil and grease the system so you don't have any problems for awhile. That is about all I can think of at this time, so I hope this helps you out a bit. All the best and good luck. I will answer any more questions you might have.

It keeps eating drive belts! It looks like the pulleys are not parallel. Can you align them? It appears to be spring loaded

Either the belt you are using is not the correct lenght and width, or one of your pulleys is worn out. Make sure that you are using the correct belt. Poulan mowers (made by AYP) will typically use a fractional length belt...meaning that you have to buy a Poulan belt to go on it. With the proper belt and pulleys, the front drive pulley should be level and the belt pattern should not contact anything other than the pulleys.
Good luck!
