You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. Your dell should pick the TV up as a monitor if you have the VGA cable connected. The vga cable has a blue color on the TV but on the laptop, the color of the port is usally brown or dark in color. Windows should pick up on the new device and enable it. The Dell has an Fn key combination to allow you to toggle through the integrated / external monitor choices that you would have with two monitors active, that being clone both desktops to both monitors, extend the desktop from the laptop to the TV, use only the tv and turn the integrated off, use just the integrated and leave the TV off. The key combination is: Fn + F8
