If you have a basic knowledge in electronic repair, the first thing you need to do is to remove the back cover of the tv to access the internal part. then you must check first the power supply board if their is a component that get burned. if ok, the next place to be will be the power inverter board and screen back light which the connector get burned.

Makes popping noises

If the wires are shorting out you would either experience a power interruption, circuit breaker or fuse blow, and/or a smell of some sorts. If this is under warranty I suggest you turn it in for a new one. On the other hand, remember it is a percolator device and when water is heated to the desired temperature the action is for the hot water to rise and flow over the basket containing the coffee grounds. Percolation makes a popping sound, at that is a normal condition.

Screen is black

sounds like it was enough to pop something in the tv, smell the back of the tv smell if anything smells burnt or hot. unplug the tv and let stand for about a hour unplugged then trying it again but if it does smell chances are you will have to see if your still under warrenty and have the unit replaced.

When I plug in my 36" Zenith TV the screen stays black, a clicking and popping noise comes from the back and I smell acrid smoke like from an electrical fire. What is going on, and is it repairable?

Caution: Never power on the TV set again until this fault is retified.
It is anode arcing takes place inside the TV. Its final anod cap is arcing with neighboring surroundings. A smoke like fume along with a foulin smell will be there. It is repairable. Its Line Output Transformer [LOT] shoud be replaced with similar type and number. Before connecting the anode cap to the final anode of the picture tube, cleen the anode hole and surrounding area with some sort of cleaning solvent [we uses pure turpentine for that purpose], throughly, and wipe it out to dry out well.

On one minute then POP loud noise, burning smell

Loud popping and loss of power is common on plasma TVs and is usually either the Y sustain or Z sustain boards or buffers; in these instances the damaged part will be quite evident.

If this is an LCD you might have degraded insulation on one of the pink/blue backlight power leads causing high voltage to 'arc' to the chassis.

The loud bang and smell is actually to your advantage as in these circumstances the damaged part is usually evident. It'll just be a matter of popping the back off and sleuthing around. :)

I think that the pop you heard was an electrolytic capacitor blowing its top on the picture frame board. If you are able to check this for yourself by looking on the board for the one/s with a bulging top or are a brownish/black colour like something has caught fire. And also in this situation smell can be of great help as it will smell burnt out but PLEASE before putting your nose or anything else in the tv take all necessary precautions against electric shock and discharge any electrolytic capacitors in the vicinity. If you are not able to do this yourself find a competant technician. Hope this helps.
