Question about Dell Inspiron 1420 Notebook
The boot process starts up. The machine actually boots, but it never displays anything on the LCD screen. I have just hooked the computer up to a monitor, while the video is not sized or set properly, it does display on the monitor's screen.
If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Well it is most likely a issue with the Video driver as you are able to boot to the safe mode.I would suggest going back to the safe mode and deleting the present driver for the video from the device manager.before you restart the system just download the latest version from the support.dell.com so that you can reinstall it.Also check in the graphic properties which screen is set to be the defuat.Incase still not working i would suggest reinstalling the operating system before replacing any hardware.

SOURCE: Inspiron 8500 - Display issue
with the external monitor attached press <FN><F8> to toggle between internal and external display. if still nothing then it sounds like the video card.
Check all the connections (especially the ground screws) that was a problem with one I worked on last year.

that actually isnt a true svideo port. it does output video, but it needs a converter that dell sells for about 30 bucks (ebay is cheaper). it plugs directly into the "s-video" port on the computer and splits it off into both an svideo connection and an rca connection.

you need to enter setup by tapping one of the f keys or the delete key. i'm not sure which it is for this model. when you enter the bios setup change the boot order to boot to the dvd first. hit f10 and save the change then reboot with your install disk in the drive. it should start installing.

Obviously the issue is with the computer's inverter cable. It's not the LCD issue at all.
