SOURCE: want to convert pitco frialator model 14 from gas to propane

I agree - What everyone fails to tell you about conversion from Natural Gas to Propane -
1 - Take your time -
2 - The parts you get may be to many
3 - If you are going to use the unitl out-side - Wind is not your friend -
4 - While 20lb tanks will work - 60lb tanks are the best
I have found that only 70% of the gas in a 20lb tank will be used - the Amount of preasure / volumne decreases as the tank gets empty - a gas grill will empty a tank - a Deep Fryer (I have a Pitco 14 and 35c) will not - therefore, 60lb tanks
5 - Also, a 3/8 hose and connections will work, but 1/2 hose and connection work better - especially with a 60lb tank
6 - Find a good welder supply store to work with to get the hoses and adapters - Stay away from Lowes, Home Depot and other Box Stores - They are ok for most things, but not this project - Pay the extra money for the right stuff.

1 - Have 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2 wrenches - Open and Box style
2 - A very good philips and slotted screw-driver
3 - Remove the Front Door and Front Panel
4 - Remove the Burners - Be careful - they are heavy and if dropped, they do crack
5 - The orfices for the burners are simple to change
6 - The Gas Regulator on the Control valve is simple - not easy to get to, but simpe to change - and make sure it is tight, (so it does not leak) but not to tight - it can craxk
7 - The silver thimbel - it is a atomizier for the pilot - is also easy to replace, but hard to get to - don't bend the gas tube to much and be carefull removing the old one - it is jamed into the pilot
8 - Wind - IS NOT YOUR FRIEND - If outside, you need to cover the left, back and right side from wind - it will push the gas out of the burner (at the orfice) and into the cabinet and it will "POP" with gas - the orfices will have little flames on them - very yellow and very bad -

I'm getting a lot of soot from my propane fired fryer. Otherwise works well.

The burner flames must be BLUE. Yellow flames will produce soot. Sounds like the burner orifice size needs to be checked.

I would think so. Check with the gas compan and verify the pressures. Better yet get a professional to do it for you so you do not blow the place up.

I have a pitco deep fryer... Everything works fine, but when the burners go off, I get a popping sound that blows out my pilot light

It sounds like the burners and tubes may be dirty and clogged in your fryer. The burners are removable and need to be cleaned periodically. The tubes can be cleaned when the burners are out using a burner cleaning brush. If the above mentioned items appear to be clean, you may have a gas pressure issue.

Hi, we bought a pitco 40s propane 2 weeks ago at bargreen, it turned out to be a leaker at the tubes, which was confirmed by a 3wire technician. now our business is on halt, we're losing business...

Is this a new fryer first of all? If so, then whoever you bought it from should be working with you to help you get it fixed. If it's new, it's under warranty from Pitco... If it's not new, and used, was there any kind of warranty from Bargreen? If not, then you're screwed. A deep fryer that leaks, cannot be re-welded and to replace a leaking frypot is expensive and usually not worth the money it cost to do so.... A new 40 lb. fryer runs approx $750, and to fix one normally runs $5-600.00. So, you can see that it's more cost effective to just go ahead and buy a new one. Try and find a dealer who sells and deals with used equipment, and buy your new fryer through them. See if he/she will give you some sort of credit for the used one that leaks towards your new purchase... That dealer can then replace the frypot and resell the unit to another customer.

I would try to deal directly with Pitco... Find out who your sales rep is for your area/state and call them directly. They are supposed to help customers with issues like this and should be happy to help you, as long as it's a new unit.... I really don't understand why they haven't helped you so far, if it's new? You can also tell either or both of them that you are going to the local paper... That usually works with just about any company. If you need any further help, I'm in Cincinnati and our number is 888-542-5959. Thanks and good luck, Susan Restaurant Equipment Outlet

What are most common problems found with pitco frialator fryers?

Some of the most common problems with Pitco fryers is failed Hi-Limit thermostats, carbon build up on burner tubes, and dirty or clogged burners. This hi-limit thermostat is mounted inside the fry tank on one of the burners. Often the cappillary tubes are damaged or broken during cleaning causing the limit to fail. The hi-limit is the most common part I replace on Pitco fryers. The other common items are self explanitory. Keep the fryer clean in all areas, including burners and tubes. You will see the repair man less often.

You can check the voltage generated by thermopile using a voltmeter. Set the voltmeter on milli-volt setting then heat up the thermopile. When properly heated, it can generate 500 to 750 milli-volts.

Fryer

Either Pitco SG line or any frymaster. These may be a tad more costly upfront but will save you down the road in repair costs and also parts will be available for a long time to come. I favor the pitco sg35cs myself this is a simple fryer very easy to repair and the parts costs are very resonable. As far as operating cost go in the fryer world they all are around the same.
