Yaesu ft-857 squelch problem

Your RF gain control needs to be turned all the way up to be able to receive signals and if you are on one of the HF bands like 40 meters or any HF band the squelch control needs to be all the way off! You do not use squelch on HF! When on VHF or UHF then you would rotate the squelch control just to the point that the background noise stops and go no further. Higher squelch settings will only block weak signals and your radio will be deaf! Squelch control rotated just to the point the background noise stops! NO SQUELCH ON HF. Turn the squelch all the way off on HF!

Have interference after incoming transmission which remains til mic is keyed stays clear til after next incoming.

perhaps the squelch is set too "open". Try to program a tone code into the radios. Many times the manufacturer expects you to use a tone and they set the squelch too high, or open. This causes the squelch sound because the radio is trying to pull in weaker signals. If you are using a tone code, the model of the radio is needed to tell you if the squelch can be adjusted.

Squelch is open all the time on uniden bc350a scanner

Hi,

Have you turned the squelch knob all the way in both directions, to see if that helps?

If so, then you have to replace that squelch knob unit, with a newbie.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Peter

Yaesu ftm-10e squelch problem

The FTM-10E is the european version of the dual band amateur radio capable of transmitting in the amateur VHF & UHF (144Mhz & 440Mhz ) bands, that is equal to the FTM-10R sold in the US.

Many repeaters require a predetermined sub-audible tone or signal to be sent when transmitting. If several repeaters in the area operate on the same frequency, they would all transmit at the same time unless they all have different sub-audible tones. These tones allow the user to select which repeater on the same frequency will be used. The tones are either CTCSS or DCS type. CTCSS is "continuous tone coded squelch system" and DCS is "digital coded squelch". CTCSS is expressed as a frequency in Hertz and DCS is a code expressed as a number. CTCSS is more popular, since it has been around longer. When programming or tuning the radio, you will need to provide the repeater's output frequency (and the input frequency if the shift direction and amount isn't programmed - often a 600 hertz shift either up or down depending on isn't already programmed is a default value depending on the repeater output frequency) and whether or not the repeater requires a tone. If it does require a tone (most do), you will need to know the type (CTCSS or DCS) and the value (frequency for CTCSS or code number for DCS) in order for your transmitter to open the repeater and cause it to repeat your transmission AND open the squelch on the radio's receiver so that you can hear replies to your call and other conversations. Repeater directories (both printed and online) will provide all the information needed to access a public repeater, including geographical location, input & output frequencies, squelch type and values to name a few.

If you do not have the correct CTCSS or DCS set, you will see the signal meter on the radio indicate traffic - but you will not hear anything because the radio is squelched. Check the manual page 40 for information on how to program the squelch, and page 42 describes the "shift" I mentioned above. Page 64 & 65 details the theory of squelch via CTCSS and DCS and will help you understand it better.

Basically, you have a "standard" squelch - the knob on the radio and a second squelch that is either CTCSS or DCS. Both types must be set to hear anything. Not having the CTCSS or DCS set will prevent your signal from being repeated by the repeater.

If you have more question, please add them in a comment. I hope this helps & good luck!

The scanner is stuck in open squelch

Rotate the knob counter clockwise to close the squelch. If this does not work, remove the knob by pulling it off gently and make sure the "pot" is turning with the knob. Verify the knob and "pot" are not damaged.

My blackbox radio breaks squelch only when button is pushed.

I am familiar with radio programming software , but not your model. You could have squelch adjustments or settings that need to be set in the software end. Did you set something to mute? Can you set the signal level for the radio to open squelch? Are you able to connect to a service monitor and inject a signal and see where it does break squelch? These are things I would check.

Check the squelch on your radio thats not recieving. If there is a monitor button ( when pushed you will hear static) try pushing it.. then get someone to call you so you can check if you can hear them. On these radios you have 2 types of squelch....1 is called carrier squelch.... it basically opens when there is a strong enough signal. This lets you only hear strong signals and "squelch out" the distant ones and background static. The2nd. is "tone squelch" ... with your radio they are often called privacy tones. If you have 2 radios set with the same privacy tones you will only be able to hear each other... only radios that are transmitting with that privacy tone will be heard on your radio. Its a high frequency tone that can't be hear by the human ear that gets "embeded" with the transmitting signal. The recieving radio hears it and opens the squelch. So... if the radio thats rxing (recieving)your signal has its squelch set for just carrier squelch it will hear any signal thats strong enough to break the squech open.... basicaly any radio within a certain range. But if your radio (one with problem) has its squelch set for privacy tones you will not hear any other radios except the ones set with the same privacy tone.... the squelch will not open until it gets a tx signal with the right tone.... so if the txing (transmitting) radio is not using tone squelch but is using carrier squelch.... and the rxing radio is set for tone squelch... the rxing radio will not hear it. With tone (privacy tones/codes) squelch you need a tone to open the squelch and then the audio can be heard... with carrier squelch the squelch will open if ANY radio is within a certain range. Check the squelch setting on the problem radio... it could have a privacy tone set. Try pushing in the monitor button so you can hear static ( you want to hear everything including static) on both radios... tx on one radio at a time and listen if it can be heard on the other with the monitor button pushed. If you can't hear any audio when the broken one is transmitting then it COULD be the mic.... if you can hear both radios with the monitor button activated than the radios are txing and have tx audio and are working... if thats the case its the privacy tones that are the problem. Take care

Often the potentometer (squelch control) becomes worn or dirty, this can be sometimes cured by spraying a WD40 or similar oil and then rapidly moving the control down and up. Do not use oil that is conductive.
