Like all body fat tests, body fat scales don't actually measure your body fat percentage. They determine your body density. The examiner (or the scales) then uses a formula to calculate body fat percentage based on body density. These formulas just predict your body fat. Unfortunately there is no one formula that accurately predicts body fat for the whole population. Differences in age, gender, ethnicity, body size, and fitness level all have a significant affect on the results. Well, whether body fat scales measure your "true" body fat percentage or not doesn't matter! As long as they can accurately monitor changes in your body composition over time, that's all you need.

Digital scales purport to measure your body fat through a process called BIA, or bioelectrical impedance analysis. Essentially, it clocks the speed that electricity travels through you. The scale runs a low-level electric current through your body, using your feet as positive and negative electrodes. The current encounters different levels of impedance, or resistance, from fat versus muscle. The scale measures this impedance, and throws it together with other factors (age, sex, height) to come up with your BMI, or body mass index.

does your scale have an orange SET button and a button with a triangle (or arrow) below the display?

Try this... make sure the scale is turned off. (and you are not standing on it)

Now press the SET button.
2 arrows should appear on the display. use the arrow/triangle key below the display to make changes and the SET key to choose.

If you have the same scale as me, you are prompted to chose Adult/Child followed by Male/Female, and finally input your height in feet/inches by pushing the arrow/triangle key until the display shows the desired height.

Press SET to finish and step on the scale like you usually do. It will now show your weight followed by your body fat %.

The easiest way to program the scales is to pull the manual up for the scale and follow the directions. The procedure does vary according to the scale.
In general the procedure is to tap the power or set button until it brings up the height and then hit the arrow keys until you get to the correct height. Hit the power or set after each entry usually height, age, gender, athlete mode. It will then beep and you will need to hit the arrow up until you see 1 (this is the memory number) tap the set or power and it will beep again. The scale is now programmed.
The general recall procedure is to hold the power or set button down for 2 seconds (or tap the up arrow) until the memory number goes up. Then just tap the power or set and it will beep. Then step on the scale to get the information. The weight will be first, then running zeroes, then thefat%, and finally water%.

To reset a profile hold down the number of the profile you want to reset (1-4) then hold down the select button at the same time. The scale will ask you if you want to erase. Then you can recreate your profile.

Tanita, the Ultimate Scale


The scale may have instructions on the bottom of the scale. (Example for the Tanita: The Ultimate Scale w/ the body fat analysis). The instructions on the back state the following steps: Step 1: press both the "Set" and the triangle buttons. Step 2: press the "triangle" button until you select the appropriate weight measurement (a) kilogram, (b) stone lbs or (c) lbs. Step 3: press the set button.
