Re: canon NP 1215 copier:
There is a drive gear, clutch or electromagnetic clutch that is either broken or dirty(slipping)
remove the back cover and manually move the image assembly back and forth on the rail determine were the drive gear, cable or motor is connected to the scan/image assembley
See if you can observe the mechanism from the back or top of the machine by ressing th eprint button (caution do not touch any electrical connections) you may have to trip any safety switches to get machine to come on with covers off
This drive assembly can be complicated if it is a series of cables if it is just an electromagnetic clutch with a gear it is relatively easy (may need ring clip remover or allen head (metric wrench) remove the assemby and clean it
If the assembly does not move after you have done the following the drive motor/clutch needs to be replaced( usually requires technician) YOu must be very mechanically inclined

You have a very old copier..... Try taking the copy board glass off and the lens cover (black box) off. Try to move the lens with your hand, will it move? Move it out of HP and turn the power ON. Will the lens move, if so look where it stops.... I believe there is a drive gear that may of cracked... You have to watch were it stop moving....Good Luck
You will have to replace it. You should make sure the copier is unplugged because there is line voltage on the lamp. Remove the glass and move the scanner to the right a bit. You remove the black lamp shield. One or two screws, I can't remember. At the rear of the lamp you should see a spring that needs to be removed. This keeps the lamp in place. Get the correct lamp, and reverse the procedure. Test to make sure the lamp comes on before replacing the shiled and the glass. Some times the from spring lead doesn't make good contact and you have to try again. Be sure to uplugg the copier if you have to work with the lamp. Sometime the foil that powers the lamp or the connections go bad. Good Luck
If you can get access to the scan rails( remove the glass platen put small amount of silicone on the rails and if it moves manually(do not force ) If this does not work there may be a clutch or electrmagnetic drive that is slipping
