My autofocus suddenly stopped working and a code of r11 comes up.

r11 isn't an error, it means that the memory buffer has room for 11 more shots.

First of all, you need to use alkaline batteries with you camera, if you use mercury ones they wont last long.

The r11 is in the lower right of the top LCD or view finder that is in the D80 manual page 36 it speaks about the buffer. The r with a number is how many shots the buffer at that moment can handle. It is not an error message. For auto focus issue is the lens in AF as well as the camera?

I'm getting the F- - code in the screen of my Nikon D80 SLR. Also, when I press down on the button to take a picture it shows r11 where it shows the number of photos available to take.

i think the f-- code means its not recognizing your lens correctly. make sure all the contacts on lens and camera are clean. the r11 is the buffer. nothing to worry about. The number of images that can be stored in the memory buffer at current settings is shown in the exposure-count displays in the
viewfinder and control panel while the shutter-release button is pressed. This number is updated as photographs are transferred to the memory card and more memory becomes available in the buff er. If 0 is displayed, the buff er is full and shooting will slow. Shooting can continue up to a maximum of 100 shots.

you can get the d80 manual here if you dont have it

Hi K akima...have followed your advice, but no luck. When I go to continuous mode, it only lets me shoot a single shot, the display briefly reads r 08 then returns to r 09 again. I`ve tried my other lenses...

nikon r09,r11, etc . it mean memory buffer of your camera. memory buffer is a temporary memory for your captured images before it store to memory card.
if r00 it mean, you can't take a picture, even 1 picture... that because the camera buffer memory is full.
the number of memory buffer will also drop if noise reduction on

With the camera on automatic it won't click, I get an r11 message.

I have the same problem - tried formatting the memory card but that didn't help.  I removed the lens and put it back on and that immediately fixed the problem.  I'm wondering if I somehow pushed a button and moved the lens enough for the camera to think it wasn't on correctly?  Anyway this seems to have solved the problem for now.  Now lets see if it lasts.

When pressing the shudder release, it won't take and it gives an r11 error

What is the camera set to that makes you think this is not just normal behavior?  Since r11 is a normal indication, meaning your buffer is empty and you have 11 shots to take before you fill it, my guess is that you just are setting the camera so that the shot is terribly under-exposed.
What do the histograms look like?  Are they exactly a single line or two all the way to the left or is it just bunched over to the left.
