Well what kind of computer you have? Desktop or notebook? If is a desktop dissconect everything and open the case after opining the case you will see you mother board your power supply look for the memory card And release those 2 clips and pull one out make sure that do not touch the botton pins of the memory card and look at the lebeling if it is DDR,DDR2 DDR3 and it will say pc 2400 or 2600 that's just an a example if you have a notebook what are you has to do is in the botton of the pc like where the keyboard side is look for a spot with a screw that it has the memory stick picture in it get a philip screw driver and removed the screw and you don't has to removed you can see it at soon you open the little cover.

Hey thanks for the speedy response! Sorry my question wasn't very specific. What I should've asked was, is there a way to use windows 7 to check the type of memory installed so that I don't have to open the case? It's a tower btw.

I am getting memory read/write error. Try to reseat the ram.

If reseating the ram does not work, there may be an issue with the ram installed. Did you upgrade the ram yourself? You may have the wrong type of ram installed.
If you have the correct ram installed, then you should run diagnostics on the ram to be sure it is functioning correctly.
Download Dell diagnostics for your system from Dell at the following website:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&catid=-1&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1525&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False
Click on the diagnostics tab and then choose "Download".
Reboot the computer and press the F12 key when the Dell screen appears. This will prompt the boot menu, use the arrow keys to select "Dell Diagnostics" and press enter. Press Tab until "Test System" is highlighted and press enter. This will run a set of diagnostics on your hardware to test all of it and determine what is functioning correctly and what is not.
If your RAM does not pass the tests, then you must replace the faulty ram. If your computer is still under warranty you should give Dell a call and have them do a service call on your computer. Telling them the results of the diagnostics test will very much speed up this process.
Best of luck!

I want to add more ram. Where do I get it? Dell

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, so don't 'Shoot the Messenger'!

The Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC uses RDRAM ram memory.
VERY expensive stuff!

Supporting Data:
This is Dell Support, Manuals, and the Dimension 8200 Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/

Scroll down the list to the heading - Specifications, and left-click on it.

Scroll the page down until you come to the heading - Memory
Now look at the first subheading - Architecture
RDRAM

You have 4 ram memory slots. (memory connectors)

EACH, ram memory slot can support up to a Maximum amount, of 512MB. (512 MegaBytes)

TOTAL Maximum Amount for your computer is 2GB. (Not shouting)

1024MB = 1GB. (1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte)

The type of Rdram ram memory is PC800, and it is Non-ECC.

(Error Correcting Control, or also stated as Error Correcting Code.
Used mostly for Server computers. Your computer does not use ECC ram memory)

In My Humble Opinion, (And again, don't shoot the messenger), it would be better money spent to buy a decent affordable computer, than it would be to upgrade the ram memory in this computer.

This statement is based upon the fact that the Dell Dimension 8200 ships with 128MB's of ram memory.
(Makes it a pretty slow computer. Rdram or not)

The average cost to install, for example, 1GB of ram memory is OUTLANDISH! (Not shouting)

Example 1:

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=24927

Example 2:

http://www.pcmemorystore.com/Dell-Dimension-8200-ram.htm

For about another $100 you can buy a pretty decent new desktop computer, that will run the one you have in circles.

Just my thoughts.

RAM

Hey kmart08,

If you're not quite sure what kind of memory you would need to replace or upgrade your existing configuration, you may wish to first look up your specific model using your Dell service tag through the following link:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Once you have entered your service tag, you should be provided with a full, detailed list of the hardware within your computer - including the type and size of the memory stick(s) originally installed. This information may also be available in the owner's manual documentation provided by Dell with your system.

According to information available, Dimension 2400 series computers should be able to use PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM, but you may wish to speak with a Dell tech support representative directly for confirmation.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
