Disconections When logging into any kind of client

Hi, No recent changes to router or pc accessing said client based programs until after issues arose and they didn't change at all ><  .    To use one of the few as an example, World of Warcraft. I can successfully log in and enter my character yet am disconnected when loading completes. The same happens if I'm logged in for a short period of time just on the character selection screen. The same effect happens with Limewire, Voicechat programs, or instant messenging programs. I can still access the internet with only the occassional hiccup in service. Any suggestions or more info I need to submit?

Your router may be blocking this or your firewall.

Wireless internet limited connectivity

The first thing to do is reset the router. There is a button on the router that you press with a paper clip. You will then have to access the router with your browser and a cat5 cable connection to change all the settings that you might need to change for security. DHCP should be enabled and there should not be an issue with the number of concurrent connections.

This is done by navigating your browser to the router and logging in. I suggest that you go to dlink.com and download the manual. Access is similar to 192.168.0.1 in the ADDRESS BAR, not search...

Here are the highlights of what needs to be set.

Wireless Router

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below.

Things to set:

Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes.

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID.

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

Log in on your router manager http://192.168.x.x and enable DHCP.DHCP provides an automated way to distribute and update IP addresses and other configuration information on a network. A DHCP server provides this information to a DHCP client through the exchange of a series of messages, known as the DHCP conversation or the DHCP transaction. If the DHCP server and DHCP clients are located on different sub-nets, a DHCP relay agent is used to facilitate the conversation.

  1. Connect to your router (by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into the URL bar) and log in. Check your user manual or documentation if you do not know the log-in credientials.
  2. 180px-dhcp_router_setup.jpg magnify-clip.png Router Setup tab Make sure you are in the Setup -> Basic Setup category.
  3. 180px-dhcp_router_disabled.jpg magnify-clip.png DHCP is Disabled Scroll down until you see 'DHCP Server' - if it is disabled, select 'Enable'
  4. 180px-dhcp_router_enabled.jpg magnify-clip.png Enable DHCP If you want, you can change the number that the DHCP IP assigning starts. This is optional, and is totally dependant on personal preference. In this picture, the maximum number of DHCP clients is 3. You may need to increase this number according to how many people will need a dynamic IP address on your network. Once the max is reached, no one else can get an address until one expires!
  5. Use the DNS servers provided to you by your ISP, or use the following DNS servers: 205.152.37.254, 205.152.132.235, 205.152.132.23; There are many DNS servers out there. It's best to use your ISP's if possible.
  6. dhcp_router_save.jpg magnify-clip.png Don't forget to save! Scroll down and click 'Save Settings'
  7. Open up the network configurations for the computers on your network (Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection or Wireless Connection) and select 'Obtain IP address automatically'

My internet reception has slowed down

first i would check and make sure you have your wireless network secured, if your using wep encryption chances are that someone is using your internet and slowing you down. go into your routers settings by typing in this address in a web browser 192.168.1.1 the default password will be admin if you havent already changed that, if you havent i highly recomend that go under the administration tab and change the password there, next click on the wireless tab and change your encryption to wpa personal and change your password just to be safe and make sure no ones stealing your signal, you can also check and see if anyone other than you is logged onto your wireless by going to the status tab and then click on dhcp client list or client table and that will list all the devices connected to your system it should start with an ip of about 192.168.1.100 and if there are more than 2 of those ip address listed then someone else is logged on and stealing your internet, change the passwords and save the settings after you make any changes then after that you'll have to reconect your laptop using the new password this should help :)

Security connectivity issues

is the PC connection you're able to maintain once upgraded to WPA a PC that is physically connected to the router? if so, that would make sense because WPA (and WEP for that matter) are only wireless security protocols and have no protections for hard-wired connections.

In order to convert your system to WPA security, you must first make sure all of your hardware is WPA compatible (that isWPA Drivers are available for it).

For your PC wireless connection, if you're running Windows XP you can go to the microsoft website and download the WPA client. It is available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 815485. install the update and reboot. you will then be able to enable WPA security on your client.

Then you'll possibly need to update the drivers for your hardware for WPA support (router, wireless NIC, etc) if they did not already come enabled.

next you get to configure the router for WPA. you'll want to make sure you're set to WPA with preshared keys (no authentication server required), use TKIP as the algorhythm, and leave group key renewal at it's default value. and of course Select a key that is not likely to be guessed. write the key down as you'll need to configure your NIC using it.

to configure your NIC, once you're in the configuration menu select WPA-PSK for your authentication, TKIP for the encryption mode, in data encryption set it to TKIP, and in the network key put the key you selected earlier.

At this point you should be able to access your wireless router (or other access point). These instructions were kind of generic since i do not have the specific router you're using available to me, but the settings i discussed should be pretty universal when it comes to WPA security.

Everything is working very well on my di524

Hi,

To my knowledge, the only password that could be set/changed is when you log into to your DI524 web configuration page. Once the WiFi router is setup and running, you can also changed. There is no password required for your wireless clients (users). There is however a provision for Security key which could be WEP, WPA or WPA-PSK. All of these could be accessed upon entry to the web configuration page of the DLink DI-524.

This page is an emulator that can help you be familiar how things are done to configure your WiFi router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
