Just bought a WGR614v9. The problem is, when my friend brings her laptop over, it finds my router in the list of available networks and connects to it with no problem, but there is no data transfer. Its as if someone has turned the cable modem off and left the wireless router on. Obviously this is not the case because my laptop works perfectly along side hers( all she gets is the Internet Explorer error page). Her laptop connects at other places (coffee shops...ect) so we have eliminated the laptop as the problem. Kinda at a loss here>

I will assume you have setup your router and changed some basic settings and are using some sort of security on your wirelss router, WEP, WPA, etc. I have had this problem in the past where the security settings were not just right and it showed connection, but not activity. I had changed from WEP to WPA and a family memeber who previously could connect could not anymore.
On you friends laptop, delete the the profile for your router and start over. ie. find your router and add it to their laptop with the current password. Do not just try and change it, as it can still give you issues.
Another possiblity is you have turned on "Wireless Card Access List", MAC filtering. This could also allow a person to connect but then not allow data transfer.
Beware: Before you hold the reset button for over 5 sec, as another suggested, you will be defaulting your router to new out of the box settings with no security or any previous modifications.

Unplug the cable modem, wait 10 secs and plug it back in. Do the same for the router. if no luck, reset the router with the reset button behind by holding it down for 15 secs and release, then wait 60 secs and try connecting again. If no luck, its something to do with the internet settings on your friend's laptop.

1.Log into router 2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) 3.Note router name you are connecting to. 4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses. 5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. 6.Note router name you are connecting to. 7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet. This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
I believe the checkmark light is to say that the internet connection has been successful. Are the laptops connecting to the router but not the internet?
Connect a PC/laptop to the router via ethernet cable and goto the routers homepage (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). then double check that your ISP settings have been entered correctly. This should get you online, if the problems persist contact your ISP to clarify your broadband settings, user logon, and that their service is up and running.

The Netgear router needs the wireless settings configured i.e SSID, WPA encryption etc and the wireless card in the laptop/computer needs to be configured with the router's wireless settings for the laptop/computer to connect with the Netgear wireless router. I should first thank you for the clear details you have given about your connection .I will try best to help you.The firmware version can be older so check the firmware version and upgrade it. Try to open the netgear smart wizard page in your wired computer by going to www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.1.1.The USERNAME:ADMIN and PASSWORD:PASSWORD(default).We can troubleshoot this only if this page is opened.In the netgear page at left side blue screen under maintenance->router status check the firmare version if its older version then click on router upgrade and check for the new version from internet(click on check tab) and upgrade the firmware.Hope this solves your problem if not try with different laptop wirelessly connect if you are able to connect then its the computer problem contact your computer vendor.Rate me if i have helped you that will motivate me.Thank you.Have a good day.
that light indicates data flow on port 3, please ensure the WAN cable is connected to the wqan port, not LAN3

using a cable connection, connect to routers web interface http://192.168.2.1 and check the wireless security settings are the same on the router and on the pc that does not have connectivity
