The agitator is supposed to turn freely one way then catch the other. in the top of the agitator there is three teeth that retract when you go counter clockwise and then when they go clockwise they come back out to bite on the inside of the agitator and then spin it. Those teeth are called DOGS. It is only when you can spin it freely both ways that you have a problem. There is nothing wrong with it. Congrats.

My washer fills with water, wont agitate but spins and drains

The agitate is a slow speed on a two speed motor. That said, there are several things
which can cause this. I have seen a bad connection on a motor plug do this.
This can often be seen as a dark spot on the semi- clear connectors.

Also a missing point on the timer (They can burn shut and pull off the contact). One way
to test the timer is to see if the washer will agitate on other cycle settings.

Third would be the motor itself. I haven't seen a partial failure ever.

One last thought, If you have a two piece agitator, the "Dog Agits" may be bad,
If you can grab the upper portion of the agitator and it turns freely back an forth, then
they have worn out. They are about 4 dollars. Take off the top plug/softener cap and there is a
bolt (usually 7/16th) that unscrews. Loosen this bolt counter clockwise and remove upper
assembly, The center part containing the agits can be removed and should be very
obvious as to their reassembly. Hope this helps.

I have a GE washer which the agitator and tub do not spin. I can turn both freely by hand. The belt is in tact. During the cycle, the motor just osillates a minute amount in both the clock and counter...

it might be the safety switch under the door.
it is a switch that will not allow the spin cycle to spin unless the door is closed - like when you look in your washer while its spinning and as soon as you open the door the spinning stops until you shut the door again.
if its damaged it will not allow the spin cycle to work.
try look under the lid.
costs around $3.00 put in with a screw driver good luck

My washer fills with water and drains but does not agitate or spin. The belt is fine. This washer is one year old.

The top of the agitater should only turn counter clock wise by hand. If it free wheels the plastic dogs between the 2 halves of the agitator are broken. Cheap fix.

Just had a similiar problem a couple weeks ago. There are some small parts in the agitator called "dogs". Here is a picture:

The "dogs" are the 4 small parts in the lower right. They need replaced. It can a little tricky but they are relatively inexpensive. Mine were $6.

Hi, seems like this drive shaft and clutch assembly wasn't assembled properly. the agitator should spin counter clockwise and clock wise(both ways). I would return this unit for an exchange before the warranty is canceled.

Locked up agitator,

If your agitator is a 2 piece, it has a rachet action and turns free counter clockwise and locks to the bottom piece when turning counter clockwise.
The transmission disengages the agitator when it is in the spin mode. If you put the washer in the spin cycle the agitator should free up.
If the washer is spining ok and the agitator is not turning free you have a transmission problem.
