Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

Linksys And Vonage Setup Through Comcast

I Have Called Linksys Support Many Times With No Luck.
I Have Done It Myself Being Very Computer Savvy But Still Can Not Connect To The Web. I Am Running On Comcast Along With Vonage But Every Time I Try To Setup The Equipment I Get Very Confused.
I Need To Know How To Setup The Linksys Cable Gateway/Modem/Router/4-Port Switch Along With Vonage To Get On The Web So My Mother Can Get Wireless Signal With Her Linksys Wireless PCI Card But Also Get On The Web Myself. I Have A Motorola Surfboard Modem And A 3 Year Old Linksys Cable Modem
There Are 4 Ethernet Ports On The Linksys Modem, 2 On The Vonage Modem 1 For Internet And 2 For Ethernet But Only 1 Ethernet Port On The Motorola Surfboard And That Is Where I Am Stuck As There Is No Place To Plug In The Ethernet Cord Connected To The Comcast Modem Other Than The Linksys Router But With No Luck So How Do You Get Online? I Have No Dial Tone On The Phone When I Connect The Cords To The Modem And I Have Tried To Connect Different Ways And Limited Activity Shows Up Along With No Dial Tone And The Automated Message That I Hear On The Phone Says This Device Is Not Setup For Use. Why Is This So Hard For Me?
Please Help Me Out And Get Me Setup. I Can Not Even Access The 192.168.0.1 Web Address And Configure The Router To Connect Becuase I Can Not Even Set It Up. I Have Struggled With This For Months And Am Sick Of Linksys Support Team. They Seem To No Nothing About Their Job. Please Reply ASAP. Thank You For Your Support And Have A Wonderful New Year.

Hi there,
I will try to make this as clear as possible, but if you have nay questions, please come back here and let me know.

You will need 4 things: 1 Surfboard Modem, Wrt54G, vonage router, computer. Put them next to each other without having plugged in anything ( no ethernet, no power cable!). Make sure that the WRT54G router is back to default settings by pressing the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds.

  1. Connect the power cable to the Modem. Power light on?
  2. If yes, connect the coax cable from the wall to the modem. (The one that looks like a TV cable)
  3. Connect the power cable to the router and wait until the power light is on steady.
  4. Connect your modem to the router. Plug an ethernet cable first into the modem and THEN into the WAN port (the label says "Internet") of the router.
  5. Plug an ethernet cable into one of the router LAN ports and connect it to your computer.
  6. Power on the computer.
  7. Open the Control panel and the Network Connections applet.
  8. You should see something called "Local Area Connection".
  9. Double-click on it and click the Properties button.
  10. Double-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and make sure both radio buttons are set to "Obtain...automatically".
  11. Close all Windows by clicking "OK".(The second one takes a moment, because it applies the settings.)
  12. In the open window choose the Support tab and you should see your IP address, your Default Gateway (192.168.1.1) and your DHCP server (192.168.1.1)
  13. Open Internet Explorer and type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar.
  14. If you have reset your router to factory defaults, leave the username blank and type "admin" in the password field.
  15. On the first page (Setup), you should set the Internet Connection Type to "DHCP", unless you get a static IP from comcast (which i doubt).
  16. Go to the Wireless tab and ensure that wireless is enabled.
  17. Go to the "Security Tab - Wireless Security" and ensure that NO security is enabled for now.
  18. Open a new browser window and see if you can open a web page. Use an address that is unlikely to be in cache - try "http;//www.mit.edu" or so.
  19. Close your browser for now and come back here later to setup your wireless security etc.
  20. Now power on your vonage router and wait until the power light comes on steadily.
  21. Connect an ethernet cable from a LAN port of the router to the WAN port of the vonage router. (Plug it into the router first!)
  22. The vonage device should blink and establish a connection (Internet light is steady on). This might take a moment, because the device is downloading the newest firmware as well.
  23. Once the vonage router is on and the lights are steady (you didn't say which vonage device you have, so I can't tell how many lights there are), plug normal telephone ( not a wireless one) into the vonage router and see if you can get a call signal.
  24. If you were successful - sit back for a moment, enjoy the triumph and treat yourself with a nice drink!
There are a couple of things you still have to do, but the main thing is done.
  1. Make sure that you can access the internet from your wireless laptop before you start changing settings.
  2. Get a manual for the router here.
  3. Go back to your router's web page and set up wireless security (don't use WEP - that is not secure enough)
  4. You will have to setup QoS (Quality of Service), in order to prioritize your VOIP traffic, so calls go through clear even when you are surfing/downloading.
  5. You can setup QoS via IP or MAC address. Use your vonage router's MAC address (you'll find that on the bottom sticker), because it creates less overhead.
  6. If you plug in anything else into your vonage router, it might be on a different subnet and might not be able to communicate with your other computers (vonage router often use 192.168.15.x as their IP address)
  7. Once you're up and running and feel familiar with the settings for your router, I would change to a different firmware, because QoS is a crucial point for VOIP and I never was really satisfied with the Linksys firmware. I use tomato, for the simple reason that I was afraid of other more complicated firmware and you can always go back to Linksys, of you don't like it.
So...my fingers are bleeding now, but I hope this helped you out.
If so, please come back and let me know. Others might have a similar question.
If not, just tell me where you got stuck and we will go from there. According to the movie 'Galaxy Quest':
"Never give up, never surrender!"

I tried all the steps and everything works, but My phone (which is a cordless handset) is not getting a signal. I do have internet now working on my ipod touch, but no phone. The second set of steps are difficult for me to figure out. How do I get back to the router's web page to set things up? I am on a MAC. Thanks so much for your clear instructions. I have tried to do this a few different ways and this is the first that has worked!

I have comcast cisco cable that is working fine but when I hook up vonage I get no internet why?

More than likely you need to enable split tunneling on vpn settings in router. If Vonage uses a vpn tunnel like other VOIP services do, then it is probably encrypting all traffic on your Internet/WAN interface. With split tunneling enabled it will only encrypt traffic to and from Vonage. I'm making a few assumptions here, but it should be worth a check.

I need a simple set-up manual for model # WRT54GS router

Your Internet service provider is comcast cable company.
You need to open the setup page of the router and change the Internet connection settings manually.

Connect the computer to the router and modem to the router.
Open the setup page of the router using 192.168.1.1
Click on MAC address clone. Enable it and click save settings.
Power cycle the router and your main computer will be online.
Then you can change the wireless settings manually.

How should the D-link be setup to work with comcast and vonage? After I set vonage or internet do not work. I tried the comcast modem to d-link and d-link to vonage.

If you want to RECEIVE telephone-calls:

COMCAST ADSL/CABLE modem <---> VONAGE <---> wireless-router

Turn each piece off.
Turn on the COMCAST modem, and wait for its lamps to settle-down to a "steady" pattern.
Turn on the VONAGE router, and wait for its lamps to settle-down to a "steady" pattern.
Turn on the D-link router, and wait for its lamps to settle-down to a "steady" pattern.
Restart the computer that is connected to the D-link router,
and you should have Internet access.

Setup router with vonage device and dsl modem

For the best call quality, I suggest you connect the Vonage router to the DSL modem, and if necessary, connect the Linksys router behind that. Why are you using a second router, though - you probably just need a switch or hub, if you're trying to connect more machines. Small networks rarely require more than one router. MaverickSolutions.biz may be able to provide additional support if you can give us more details about your installation.

Internet connection problems

Sorry but that seems to be a pretty convoluted explanation. Here is how it should go.
Vonage unit connected to phone line(s) and cable modem. Linksys connected to Vonage box. Computers connected to Linksys.
Ethernet has a length limitation of about 300 feet before you need another switch (hub) or a repeater. Does your wire length exceed this?

If your planning to connect the phone adapter behind a router make sure that the following ports are open/forwarded on the router; UDP ports 5060-5061, UDP ports 16384-32767 take note that 5060 and 5051 one are SIP ports and must be assigned to the IP address of that was assigned to by the router to the adapter or the IP that was manually configured on it.

I found a link that could help you check the setting on your linksys phone adapter

Hope this will help you solve your VOiP problem...
