Hot spot on fridge/freezer

Kelvinator no frost 355 fridge/freezer does not freeze too well nor cool either although it will freeze vegetables. The freezer at the top has a small amount of accumulated frost on the sides and a frozen ice puddle on the bottom but most noticeably the lower outer ledge of the freezer door opening between the fridge and freezer is very hot to touch. This heat transfer might explain why the freezer is not so cold.
Can you please suggest how to remedy the hot spot?
It is a very old fridge which still runs and has shifted house a few times in its life. It doesn't make abnormal noises nor is it overly full or airflow around the outside of the fridge restricted. I haven't checked or cleaned anything yet coz i'm not sure where to start. Are there drain holes inside the freezer that maybe blocked. The thermostat will still regulate the temp.

Update: I have defrosted the fridge and freezer using a hairdryer and cleared the drain at the back of the freezer. Once the ice was chipped off the fan inside the freezer it immediately started to spin, however it hasn't moved since the appliance was completely defrosted. The freezer will now freeze stuff as long as it is sitting on the cold metal floor of the freezer but not if sitting on the shelf.
It is now my understanding that the hotspot on the ledge between the fridge and freezer is caused by the heater of the defrost system. The heater does not turn off, although at times it seems to be cooler to the touch. I tried to gain access to the heater by removing the doors and attempting to remove the cover panel but stopped as it looked as though i would have to bend it to clear the tabs on at either end and being metal it will never be straight again. There is no access from the back.
The timer by the compressor can be heard ticking at times but the heater remains on whether or not the timer is on, also, whether or not the temp sensor (inside the fridge screwed to the cooling thingy) is inside the fridge or not; I unscrewed it, moved it outside the fridge and closed the door for a couple of days to see what would happen.
The compressor can be heard cycling on and off.
It seems that everything was working but the heater was always on. i don't have a multi meter to check the electrics.

Is there a simple trick to access the heater or maintenance step I can perform or is this a job for a professional?
An explanation of what maybe happening or advice would be appreciated oh great GURU. Thanks for your time.

SOURCE: Fridge ice accumulation inside and water dripping outside

Hi, Are you getting ice build up in the freezer side as well? There is a air shuttle between the fresh food side and the freezer side. thwater might be getting in the freshfood side from there. Look at the bottom rear panel in the freezer for ice build up. Ig=f there is ice, you will need to get to the drain from inside the freezer and check for blockage.
Please let me know if I can help you further.

SOURCE: water accumulating in vegetable bin on model

This is caused by a clogged drain tube or the door is not closing correctly. Be sure the seal around the fridge door is closing correctly. If not, the drain tube needs to be replaced or cleaned.

Hi,

This problem is most commonly due to a defrost drain being clogged. The water that should run down the drain is accumulating and freezing. See the link below for details on taking care of the problem.

Everything is freezing in the vegetable drawer

For this problem, its indicating towards problem with damper assembly.----------

The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. ----------- The damper is operated by a motor. Its a complete damper assembly with motor included in it.--The damper has door.Which closes and open with the help of motor. In your case the damper door is remained open, its not closing.Due to this the cool air from freezer section is running in to fridge section non-stop.Due to this the vegetables and other food in the bottom drawer freezing.--------- In this problem the damper assembly needs to be replaced.---------------

This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I have a Kelvinator Opal Fridge/Freezer. The freezer is working fine but the food compartment wont cool. It used to run too cool and freeze stuff on the top shelf. The fridge seals are fine, the fan runs...

The vent from the freezer to the fridge can be blocked with frost and is preventing the flow of cool air to the fridge.
This can happen if there is frost build up due to failure of the auto defrost timer.
So please check on the fan section , remove panel and see if there is frost or block, if so check the timer Heater and the thermostat.

My fruit and vegetable drawers keep freezing my fruits and vegetables. What could be causing this to occur?

Hello, Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.the air deflector....
As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control I hope this will help....

Is this a self defrost model? Frost inside the freezer could be an air leak around the door gasket. Remove the back panel in the freezer and completely defrost the coils. Is the fan running in the freezer. That will make the frig not be cool. With the door closed peek in the gasket to make sure the light is shutting off, this will warm a frig also.
