Question about Nikon N70 35mm SLR Camera

1 Answer

NIKON N70 Hey, I just purchased a used F70 (European N70) as well, and I get an "err" message, even when my lens isn't in place. I tried messing around with the settings, the film, and all to no avail. Do you have any solutions or suggestions for this problem? Thanks, Al

The Err usually appears because the camera is in one of the auto shooting modes and the lens is either not mounted or is mounted, but is not set to the smallest aperture setting (ie 22)

The F70 was called the N70 in some parts of the world. See the illustrated instructions beginning on page 16 of the N70 manual: http://butkus.org/chinon/nikon/nikon_n70/nikon_n70.htm

The Err message alone indicates that a malfunction has been detected, and the manual recommends to fire the shutter and check for the message to clear. If it does not, to contact a Nikon Service Rep.

If it is Err + E, the film did not advance properly and needs to be reloaded.

When I atach the lens don't have any image, only the menu and in the upper display the word "Err" flash. Thank you very much.

Err on any Nikon D series camera indicates that the lens is not communicating with the camera (among other things). There are 3 things to check:
1. Is the lens you have a full-auto lens for use with the D80? 2. You need to set the lens f-stop to its maximum number (minimum opening) with some lenses for it to work right. If the lens runs from say f 1.4 to f 22 and you've left it set for f 16, it will give Err message 3. The lens may just not be seating correctly. Remove the lens and CAREFULLY inspect the contacts on the lens and camera to see if there's any discoloration, bent pins, etc. If you find this, I would suggest professional repair.
If it is only the auto-focus feature that's messed up, you can switch to manual focus and the error should go away. Of course, you'll then have to manually focus.

Try shooting in manual mode with lens set at maximum (wide open) aperture. Then try at a smaller f-stop, say 5.6 or 8. If the error message appears when your lens is set to the smaller aperture, you could have a lens problem. Try another lens using the same test. If a known good lens gives an error message, then the problem is in the body. Also try zooming to different focal lengths and see if your 18-105mm gives the error at particular focal lengths. An error here would indicate a lens problem. In any case, your lens or body would have to be repaired by a professional as these repairs require major disassembly and re-calibration.

Hi nrkelkar, In the D80 manual page 36 it speaks about the buffer. What you see as an error message is r with a number. The number is how many shots the buffer at that moment can handle. It is not an error message.

According to and directly from Nikon:

When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:
  1. Remove all accessories from the camera.
  2. Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
  3. If your Nikon camera offers resets such as the two-button reset or a hardware reset please follow those instructions provided in the product manual.
If these steps do not resolve the Err message we recommend having a Nikon Authorized Repair Technician evaluate the Nikon camera. Click here for repair information.

Is there a memory card in the camera?

Also try cleaning the contacts on the lens (light rub with a pencil eraser works).

unmount and remount the lens. Make sure you have the aperture ring on the lens set at the minimum f-stop number, ie f22, f32. There should be a small tab on the lens to lock the aperture ring in that position
