Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem
"you only need to do the following"
if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

CD Driver or CD Writer encounter such problems are a normal reading in data. Sometimes it does or not. To identify the real situation on your CD/CDWriter drive is very difficult to you.
Here is the answer to your problem.
# You use your CD/CDwriter drive for how many long years and now got a problem.

The CD ROM Drive is not ejecting properly

hi,
Locking device / software installed
First, verify no locking software is being loaded, which would allow the CD-ROM tray not to open. If you are unable to determine this, reboot the computer and as it is booting up, attempt to eject the tray. No power to computer or CD-ROM drive
If you have recently installed a new CD-ROM drive or you have moved the computer, it is possible that the power to the CD-ROM may have become loose or disconnected. Check the cable connections. Bad eject button
If you are running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP, open My computer, right-click on the CD-ROM drive and choose the option to eject. If this ejects your CD-ROM drive tray, it is likely that the button on the CD-ROM drive has become defective and it is recommended that the drive be replaced. CD stuck within drive
It is possible that a CD may have become stuck within the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM drive has a small hole (that is not the head phone jack), using a paper clip, place the paper clip within the hole and attempt to manually eject the CD-ROM tray. If the CD-ROM drive is only partially able to be opened, attempt to pull the tray gently to see if it can be manually ejected. If it cannot be opened any further, it is likely that the gears within the CD-ROM drive have become bad, dislodged, or that a CD is positioned in the drive, which does not allow it to open. Incompatibility with IDE / ATAPI interface
If you have an IBM compatible computer and recently installed the CD-ROM drive and are unable to open the drive, attempt to temporarily disconnect the IDE cable to verify that you not experiencing an issue with an incompatibility between the CD-ROM and motherboard. Once the IDE cable has been disconnected, power on the computer and see if the CD-ROM drive tray is now able to be opened. If the drive is able to be opened with the IDE / ATAPI cable disconnected, it is recommended you use the interface card supplied with the CD-ROM drive or the ATAPI interface on the sound card / motherboard. Bad drive
Unfortunately, if after following the above recommendations you are still unable to properly open the CD-ROM drive using the button on the front of the CD-ROM drive, it is likely defective and should be replaced. Caution: If you are able to open the CD-ROM drive using a paper clip. We do not recommend that you continue using the CD-ROM drive by manually ejecting the CD-ROM using a paper clip. The drive should be replaced and this is not meant to be used as a temporary solution. Additional information and tips for buying a new CD-ROM drive can be found on our CD-ROM buying tips section.

Emachine W6409. will play cd. will not play dvd.

sounds to me like you have a cd-rom drive and not a cd-r/dvd rom drive? are you sure it is a cd-r/dvd rom drive? If its not it won't play DVD's because CD drives use a different codec than DVD rom drives do. CD-r/dvd drive combos use the same codec though as one.

A cd broke in my cd rom

I've seen and come across cd-roms where cd's have broken (or in most cases exploded/shattered). In one case the drive flew open and bits of cd flew across a classroom, in most cases the drive remains shut (even the tray can get jammed).

This problem is usually caused by a flaw on the cd itself, a scratch or mark on the cd causes it to 'wobble' and due to the speeds cd-roms spin cd's they come off the 'spindle' inside (all that holds it on is a magnet).

I have taken cd-roms apart and removed all the cd parts and the drive has worked perfectly afterwards. Other times the drive has needed to be replaced, so i would say its purely luck if your drive isn't damaged in some way.

Although the problem could have been your drive. Without being able to get the drive ejecting and spinning cd's again you'll never know... just make sure you don't use an important cd to test it with!

Cd drive

Try having your cd drive cleaned. A cd drive could prevent the cd drive to read the disk properly. The drive noise is normal if the speed of your cd drive is high. Here are some links on how to clean a cd drive:

Here is the link for reducing the speed of the disk (if the sound annoys you):
