Hi,

Assuming you have a copy of XP and the License key, you simply start the computer with the CD inserted. be sure to press the key to start the CD install process when prompted.

after the CD starts, it will ask you if you want to install. Do this accept the agreement and it should prompt you to the fact that you already have an installation. Choose to install over the existing version not as an additional instance.

Here is the key...in the next step it will ask you where to install windows. choose your C:\ drive and delete that partition. you'll have to confirm a couple times. This removes the old data. Then choose the same un-formated partition, allow windows to use all the space and choose NTFS Quick format. let it run and you will have a brand new installation of XP.

Good Luck!

All you need to do is boot your laptop from the XP install cd instead of the hard drive. The install cd asks if you would like to format the partition(s) and prompts you that you are about to erase all data on the drive. To enable booting from the cd drive, press f2 or Del as the computer is booting, go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence so that cd is first instead of hd(some number).

I just want to restore to factory defaults

The best way to reset your Laptop to Factory Default is to reformat it. Depending on which version of Windows you have this will create a directory in your Hard Drive called Windows.old, or depending on whether or not you deleted the partition, it will erase everything. You'll want to back up your hard drive if you have anything worth saving.
Beyond that, pop in your recovery disk, or if you don't have it, put in your Windows disk, then restart your computer. When your computer is booting up, head into the BIOS and set your computer to boot from your DVD Drive. If you aren't sure how to do this then reformatting is probably not a good idea. Once you've booted from the disk, just follow the instructions to reformat.

Can I install sp0802n hard drive with windows xp home ed. on an old gateway essential 550. from the requirements I think I can not sure about BIOS

If you do instal it you will find the mobo specs different from the machine it came out of and will require a reformat of that drive or it will not load properly.
Always best to reformat a drive prior to putting in another machine.

I keep getting the message 2010

After a BIOS upgrade or installation of a new hard drive, the following error message may appear at POST: ERROR
2010: Warning: Your internal hard disk drive (HDD) may not function correctly on this system. Ensure that your HDD is supported on this system and that the latest HDD firmware is installed. Press <Esc> to continue

Press <F1> to Setup
The system appears to boot normally after escape is pressed and the operating system will load.
Solution There are three possible workarounds to eliminate the error:
  1. Update the hard drive firmware to the latest level. Download the hard drive firmware update, and then apply to your hard drive.
Note: This update requires a floppy disk drive.
  2. Replace the hard drive with one supported by the system being used.
  3. Use the hard drive, producing the 2010, error in the Ultrabay of the system or a docking station with the second hard drive adapter instead. The interface to the Ultrabay is parallel ATA. For more information visit, ThinkPad Second Hard Drive Adapter for Ultrabay Slim - Overview
Additional information This error is purposely generated to alert the user to potential problems with diagnostic or copy tools. There are known issues with several of these listed below.
  1. Disk Fitness Test (DFT) version 3.xx provided by Hitachi GST which uses vendor specific commands on the hard drive. These may not be correctly interpreted since they must pass through the serial to parallel ATA bridge. However, version 4.00 or later of the Disk Fitness Test (DFT) will work.
  2. HDDTEST version 0.28 by Hitachi GST does not function properly for similar reasons. Instead, use HDDTEST version 0.29 or later.
  3. DOS-based copy tools may function slowly or produce incorrect output, specifically previous versions of Norton/Symantec Ghost. These versions are not compatible with the Serial-ATA interface of the Intel ICH6M chip set. Documentation on this problem may be found at www.symantec.com. It is recommended to use either a newer version of Ghost, Norton Ghost 2003 (version 2003.789 or later) or Symantec Ghost 8.0 or later, or to use the -FNI switch when invoking Ghost from the command prompt (For example, Ghost.exe -FNI with the current version of Ghost).
Other disk copy tools and related applications, such as some backup programs, may also have similar behavior. The hard drives shipped in the affected systems will not display the message because they already have firmware that recognizes this new Serial ATA bridge chip. However, a similar drive from an earlier ThinkPad system or an OEM drive might cause the error message to be displayed. Customers may also notice the POST error message after applying a ThinkPad BIOS update if a drive without the firmware update is installed in the system. Some early systems were shipped with a system BIOS version that did not provide this POST error message. Updated BIOS has been released to provide this informative POST error message to users.

Reformat the Hard Drive First..

Boot From Windows 7 Disc,

Delete all The Partitions on that drive,

Install Windows 7...

have fun!

if it doesn't work, check your bios setup configuration!.....some hard drives have a setting that prevents this.........check it and retry, but only if the above doesn't solve this issue ok!

I . asked a friend of mine who is a PC Guru and he has a programme for removing it. But and it is a big But!, you have to use the pro gramme first. once you have tried to un-install it yourself it does not work. In the end I had to wipe the Hard Drive and reload windows. Nero Very naughty and I was not a very happy chappy. Previous experience I,d already made a back up of my program mes but it was still time consuming.

Hello the hard drive of our laptop needs a full reformat so i can reinstall xp but how do i format it without a working opperating system? thank you

You can do a full reformat right from the windows xp install disk.  Put the xp disk in the cdrom drive and restart the computer.  Upon restarting a message will come up ( Hit any key to boot from CD )  Hit any key,  the files will load then you will be able to format the hard drive and also load windows XP.
If for some reason your system doesnt boot from the cd, you might have to go into the Bios and change the boot order from the hard drive or the floppy to the cd so the computer will boot from the CD first. Hope this helps...                                                           Joe > Data Miner <

Will not load.

my old computer had a problem like this, i think the only way to fix a problem like this would be to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system, which would delete everything on your hard drive...if you do not want to lose the files on your hard drive, you can hook up the hard drive to a different computer as a secondary drive and take the files you need off of it...then put the drive back in the original computer and reformat...after that just put back the files back on the original computer with a flash drive or an external hard drive...
cant think of another way to solve this
