Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

My computer wont let me install OS

I recently bought 2 used computers, ( Dell Dimension 2400 and Gateway E6000 ), that supposedly only needed operating system installed, but they both say the CD drive is not installed. They look to be in very good condition, and the optical drives appear to be working, but the computers dont seem to recognize them. I'm not terribly experienced in these things, but obviously I'm missing something. I bought them for my kids, and I'd really like to get them running. Thanks for any advice you may have.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that. When I try to boot from the disk, it goes to a screen that says, " Windows was unable to load", or something like that, and it gives me options such as normal, safe, last known good settings etc. I went to the set-up menu to check the boot sequence, and it was there that I found the CD drive wasn't installed. All the cables appear to be sound, and the connections are tight. The drive seems to, otherwise, be functioning properly. Thanks Robert. -Randall

You have to reboot and tap F2 to go to BIOS select option to enable the Secondary controller and to detect the proper IDE Devices?

Also make sure the IDE cable is firmly attached and the you have pin 1 alligned properly at all 2 (or3) connectors. And if you have 2 IDE devices attached make sure one jumper ( in HD or CD ) is set to master and the other to slave.

If none of this works, try a known good CD rom drive that you can try and try switching with a known good cable.

Once the system recognize the CD ROM youre set to go !

My Dell Dimension 2400 has stopped working - how do i restore the factory settings ?

Hello,

It appears your model Dell 2400 should have been supplied with the CD's for reinstalling Windows XP, CD will be green or blue in color and the drivers and applications that came with the computer.

If so, back up your files first to an external drive and then put the CD in the CD drive and reboot the computer. It should come up to reinstall XP.

If good to go, you will be prompted to install the second Cd as well as online XP updates.
Software that was installed after you bought the computer also wouyld have to be reinstall as well as restoring your backed up file.

Rememberm all data is lost when you reinstall your operating system, unless these is a choice on install that may ask for destructive, or non-destrutive (keeps files).

I am attaching a link to Dell for your to copy and paste into your web browser for the support page for drivers and user guide in the event you need to reveiw the process.

Your computer cannot find a boot-able storage device, i.e. hard disk drive, to boot from. Either your hard disk drive is defective or the OS (operating system software) is corrupted and needs to be re-installed.

Hi:
Basically, you need to do four steps:
1) Run the Windows OS installation
2) Install all drivers off of the driver CD
3)Install programs and software that came with the computer, or ones that you added .
4) Connect to the internet, and validate your copy of windows, and run Windows Update again and again, until there are no more updates to download.

I bought 1 GB of Ram ddr 400 for my dell dimension 2400

it might be not compatible.
Do you have the older memory inserted? If yes is it the same speed as the new one you bought?
Is your laptop front side bus capable of a speed of 400 Mhz?
Try to remove the old Ram and use the new one only!

Look at the description for the diagnostic lights on a Dell 2400 here under "A possible expansion card failure has occurred."

If you have recently installed any card (wireless, sound, etc.), then this would be my first suspect.

Dimension 2400 is at 1.5MG - will not go to 2.0MG per manual!

yeah thats a normal issue with the dimension 2400 as the older bios only supports a max of 1gb of memory you will need to go to the dell website which ive linked below and get the bios update which will give you support up to 2gb-pc3200 ddr memory

Where can I put a new graphics card in my computer???

First I want to mention that the Dimension 2400 is not really a pc that's made for playing games. There is no AGP or PCI-express slot on the motherboard, so you'll have to use the (slower) PCI slot.
How to put your card in your computer is explained on this page of the Dell support website.
If you need help with finding a card, just ask me.

Good Luck
