You will need to replace the defrost thermostat on the coils located in the freezer.

SOURCE: Viking refrigerator with bottom freezer always running

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

SOURCE: Viking freezer frost build-up

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Excess water dripping into refrigerator from freezer. I am in the process of defrosting. Ice build up behind freezer back wall. Do I need a new heater or will clearing the ice from drains suffice?

Hello,

Clearing the ice build up is a good start, the problem though is the drain pan under the coil in the freezer thats iced up is blocked so when the defrost heater comes on and melts the frost from that coil,it the water is collecting in the freezer and in many cases drips into the fresh food compartment, clearing the drain will resolve your leaking/ice build up issue.THE DEFROST HEATER IS GOOD melting the frost in the first place and hence forth that melted frost stays in the freezer and becomec ice.

The freezer isn't defrosting, and as a result the ice is building up inside it, and the temperature isn't as low as it should be.

I do not really do that much on the viking brands but you are having a defrost problem which is typical in all refrigerators. The problem will be 1 of 3 things. 1st defrost timer, 2nd defrost t-stat which is located on the coils in the freezer section behind the freezer wall and 3rd the defrost heater. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but 1 of these is your problem For temp fix so you have your cooling back you could remove the back wall of the freezer and using a hair drier deice the unit down so air can flow properly again. Good luck. Rick

Freezer working only slightly. Refridgerator not working at all.

If you have ice build up behind the panel inside the freezer, you most likely have a bad defrost heater. You can remove the back inside panel of the freezer. Take a hair dryer and defrost the ice. When the ice is gone you can inspect the heaters. If they are not fixed it will continue to happen. When the coils ice over, first the freezer will get warmer. The first complaint is that the ice maker stops working. Then the ice cream starts melting (Due to the sugar in ice cream, it has to be around 0 degrees to stay froze solid). Then the fresh food section starts warming due to the fans not being able to force air into the fresh food section.
Please rate solution if helpful. Thanks

It seems to be not working lights on just not cold as before no ice

First you should check to see if your fans are running, one by the compressor and the one inside the freezer. If they are working check in the freezer for frost or ice build up on the back panel. If you have ice build up on the back then you more than likely have a defrost problem. If it is a defrost problem you could temporarily get it to cool again by manually defrosting the unit. this is only temporary though and if you do this a tech will have a hard time diagnosing the problem until the ice builds up again. Let me know what you find with the checks I gave you and I can step you through the rest
