What is the model number of the unit?
The machine is a Whirlpool. On the lid it says Stylemaster #907481. Thanks for asking.
If your washing machine tends to fill and drain at the same time, it could mean your drain hose is too low. This causes siphoning, a natural process which is gravity-related. The rule of thumb here is to always have the drain hose in a standpipe which is taller than your highest water level. A safe level would be 38" from the floor. Do not push the end of the drain hose very far into the standpipe or siphoning will result!
Thanks, but it doesn't fill and drain simultaneously. It fills all the way to whtever water level the machine is set at. Once it's all the way full it then drains back out again.
I see, let me check my manuals for that unit.

If it is draining then the motor is turning the pump so it is ok.
This washer has no belt so that is not the problem.
Remove the cabinet and bypass the lid switch wires and put into a spin. Watch the clutch to see if it is turning. If the clutch housing is not turning and you know for sure the coupler is not broken then you need a new transmission. If the clutch housing is turning but the basket is not spinning you have something binding the basket or you need a new basket drive and clutch.
If you have only looked at the coupler from underneath you may not be able to tell if it is broken in the center. If it is broken again your transmission is not staying in neutral drain until the water is drained. That means it is going into spin with full load of clothes and water. This puts a lot of pressure on the coupler and causes them to fail prematurely. If this is the case you will need a new transmission.
Post back if you have any questions.

It sounds like the coupling between the motor and gearbox has worn out. It should cost around $15 plus shipping and handling.

Hello, your problem is going to be with the lids switch, in this machine it is going to be a magnetic contact. You can confirm this my pulling the front panel off and accessing the wireing to the lids switch, If you have electrical knowledge bypass the lid switch using a wire nut and run the machine. If all is ok make sure you relpace the lid switch since it is there for a reason. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. Good Luck!!!

Sounds like it is the bearing on the water pump. Take off back plate and replace and remove 3 screws and two hoses (the one hose is a waste line so make sure you have a bucket to empty our waste water) after removing these remove belt on bottom of pump.
