How do i format a disc?

You can only format re-writable disks, and it is usually done with the software that is used for burning the disk. Programs like Nero Burning Rom allow you to completely wipe a disk.

P4M9007MB-8RS2H mbd does not access dvd rw but works fine with cdrw

What kind of connection do you use for each one? SATA or IDE. Take a look at these photos.

They are from hard dsiks but the connectors are the same at the cd-dvd drives.

I'm trying to install a DVD burner into my Dell GX520 (mini tower) and can't work it out ... can anyone help?

If you install the DVD drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive using the second connector, then the jumper on the DVD burner has to be set to SLAVE.
If you elect to install the DVD burner on the cable which is connected to the second IDE controller (this is the preferred way), then the jumper setting can be set to either MASTER or SLAVE provided there are no other devices on this cable.
When the computer boots up go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the DVD burner, if not then the jumper settings on the DVD burner is not correct.

Hello jpptalbot.
You can install the CDRW on a free IDE channel (which is not being used by any devices) and there is no need of using a jumper in this case.

How to install an apoen 5224 crw

If you have only a hard drive apart from this CDRW look at the connection to the hard drive and follow to the IDE0 connecter on the mobo.(do not connect CDRW to this as it will slow up the harddrive). Next to this will be another connector IDE1, if you already have a device connected to this there will be an IDE cable already there. On the IDE cable half way up will be another connector, connect this to your CDRW and set the plastic cap jumper to the SLAVE position. If no device connected you need an ide cable from the connector on the motherboard to the CDRW and set the jumper at the back at slave. Just remember if you have two peices of hardware on one cable one is set at 'MASTER' and one is set at 'SLAVE'. Don't forget to connect the power lead from the power supply unit to CDRW. Restart pc and it will be auto detected.
