I do not have a room thermostat connected to my oil fired central heating boiler. I want to install a wireless room thermostat to avoid having to run cable. how do i go about this and which is the best...

All wireless wall thermostats are Millivolt controlled. rather than having an 18 or 24 volt (transformer) wired wall thermostat. Before purchasing any wireless wall thermostat, you need to determine what your oil fired boiler requires for activation. My experience tells me, that it's going to require either 18 or 24 volts. In which case a wireless thermostat won't work.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Symptoms sound like crossover might be part of problem:
Crossover is when cold water enters hot water line due to faulty plumbing part like check valve, mixing valve, or bad faucet cartridge.

Well in your case,if the central heating was working before you change the defective thermoatat.Phaps you have done the wrong connection of the thermostat,if you look well at the connection of the thermostat, how will you recognise the earth borne is that it is fixed to the body of the part,so this means that the thermostat 3 cores are (1) common,(2) normally close,(3) normally open. With a multimeter it be very easy to determine the core that you have to cannect.

No central heating back boiler

back boiler run from a gas fire? check the instructions to operate the gas heat to the back boiler not just the fire
I presume that this a fully pumped system - air lock doubtful There maybe on/off valves on the pipes to and from the back boiler [situate close to cylinder] make sure they are on - anticlockwise turn
or there could be a blockage in the outlet from header tank usually in the loft. or If there is no water in it maybe the mains cold feed it is off.
Note if no water in it DO NOT USE the back boiler

Thermostat not firing central heating

the stat works using a bi metalic strip so that click you here is making a contact and telling the boiler to call for heating so if you getting no click you need a new room stat. Replace with same model and note the wiring most stats only use 2/3 wires depending on system
