Nikon d90 built in flash not working. Can anybody help with this problem please.when I have the camera in the correct modes the flash pops up but doesn't flash, but the pre illuminator does work.there

your flash is stuck.. you can just manually pull it up and it should work.. I have seen this a hundred times.... don't mangle it but a little squeeze and pull from the front should pop it.

Nikon d90. would a nikon sb25 flashgun work fully with the d90 camera

Not fully. It will work in non-TTL and manual modes, but it will not work in TTL mode. That is, it will work but not in fully automatic like the newer flash units.

The flash keeps popping up when I take a photo

The flash will come on because the light meter is reading that you need more light in order for your exposure to correctly turn out. If you think you don't need it, the flash will give you fill light. If you don't want it on, go into the menu, put the flash to "off" or run the camera in a manual mode and don't use the "green" auto mode. This should probably take care of it.

Cannot stop on board flash from flashing in

In commander mode, the onboard flash must flash. How else would it communicate with your slave flash(es)? Depending on your settings, almost all of the communications can be done before the picture is taken.

Is the onboard flash negatively impacting your photos?

Built-in Flash will not lock down:

There's a latch on it that should hold it down, as long as the shutter release isn't pressed with a need for flash. In the manual modes, it only fires when you release it up, so it should always stay down when you push it down in the those manual modes. FOR SURE, if it won't hold down when the camera is off, the latch is broken.

I'd take it back to Nikon and tell them to fix it. There's really no way to break it through use unless you stuck something in there, which is not likely.
