How to remove red cables from "tower" on rear of board?
I'm working on fixing my convergence problem, but am having trouble removing the two red cables on the rear of the board. One is larger in diameter and goes to the HV board (where the other 3 large red cables go). The other one is smaller and I can't see where it goes.
What is the best way to remove these cables so I can get the board out and replace my convergence ICs?
Re: How to remove red cables from "tower" on rear of...
Don't!! the red cables are the high voltage and focus lines. damage to these will disable the set! However, the board can be removed far enough to facilitate repair without removing these cables. They are usually held in place by plastic loops. release both cable from each loop they go through pull free from chassis brackets. the smaller one goes to the focus block in the front of the set (behind the speaker grill)
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

If auto convergence does not work in the menu then replace the convergence ICs and check resistors around it. You can take the grill off the front and access the convergence board fron the front. Its a small board to the right and it is removable. Do auto convergence again after replacement.
This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks! See link for more detail http://www.ehow.com/how_4575598_yourself-projection-tv-repair-convergence.html Note:The convergence/defletion/power board (the one the IC's are on) of this model is on the left hand side (when facing the back of set) also check for blown pico fuses when replacing the convergence IC's The best way to replace the IC's resistors and possibly fuses is to remove the entire board.
Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s) This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. I have the same model tv, with the same problem... convergence ICs were shot. As you look into the back of the tv, the ICs are located on the backside of the large heat sinks on the tan board. The pico fuses are directly under the heat sinks.
Removing the board is fairly easy with the exception of removing the red cables at the rear left side of the board. You have to exert a lot of force to pull them out (they go into the grey tower looking thing) but they do come out.
I recommend taking pictures of the board before removing, and then make sure you label each connector you pull off the board. There are six screws to remove as well.
Check with Sonny and Barry at this site. They gave excellent directions and have a convergence repair kit for your model tv.
Remove the front grill. There are 2 screws on each corner accesable from the rear and 2 screws inside the front door. Push down on the grill and it will unsnap. Remove the pressboard coverplate . You should see the convergence board, it is about 12" long with a big aluminum heat sink. The board can be removed by pressing on the tabs that hold it down. Be sure to mark and unplug the molex connectors from the board. One of the connectors has to be unplugged from the chassis because it is fixed to the board. Once removed you can easily get to the IC`s mounted to the heat sink. Check for any burned resistors near the IC`s.( 2.2 ohm likes to burn) The convergence can be done through the customer menu using the remote. There is no special formatting necessary. Use the number pad to navagate and the select key to change red & blue.
