SOURCE: Tape is stuck in VCR- Fast rewind and forward

It may need to be cleaned. Mechanical problems are one of the big problems with VCRs they use alot of mechanical moving parts and play for so long they fail. Plastic parts dont help much either. The pinch roller takes up the slack and is usualy the part that fails first because it constantly runs along the tape and builds a coating on the rubber so it doesnt grip the tape and pull it back into the cassette. If its not pulling the tape back in then it hangs up inside and you cant get the tape out. Fastforward uses the reels to pull the tape not so much the roller. Try and stop 2 times then fast forward then eject the tape. Try and eject the tape while its fastforwarding so it doesnt do anything else. Sometimes machines will unload after its been in fastforwad a while then it will eject. You will hear a change in the sound when it unloads, you can hear the mechanical arms move the tape in and out of the cassette. Thats when you eject it. You cant really clean it till you get the tape out. YOu can clean the pinch roller with fingernail polish or paint remover. It is a wheel inside it looks like a black tire. It pinches the tape against the capstan arm this is why it developes a film or a shine on the rubber making it slip.

SOURCE: tascam 488 mk II recording problems

Have you taken a look at the edge of the tape? tracks 1 and 2 on a cassette are usually next to the edge and you may have a bad batch of tapes that have the edge damaged. Another possible but not a likley problem might be the tape is out of spec. for the width, and your heads MAY have a little wear from use, and are trying to act like tape guides. If the tape is slightly wider than the grove worn in the head, the tape would be lifted at the edge and not make contact to the head. It is not electronic as you have diagnosed this with other tapes. Give it a try and see!

SOURCE: VHS tape was playing . After stoping does not play. Other tape will play

The idler wheel (that only drives the tape in play or scan modes) is slipping too much (very common problem). Try verify this by putting the tape in play then immediately press the fast fwd or rewind buttons to scan the tape. On older machines, the idlers used rubber friction tires - on newer ones, a clutch. Either replace the tire or increase the spring tension on the clutch.

SOURCE: tape won't play

I am assuming that the problem is with just the one tape...

Two things spring to mind - Either the tape has snapped or the reel lock mechanism is jammed.

1) Check the tape. With the cassette the right way up, press the little button on the right-hand end just behind the tape flap, flip the tape flap up and check that there is actually some tape there. If not, it's snapped.

2) With the cassette upside-down and with the tape flap facing away from you, you should see a small hole in the centre of the cassette about 2cm from the edge nearest you. Press something gently in here to release the reel locks. Then give both reels a couple of small turns back and forth (a finger stuck in the reel holes is ideal for this!) Before you put the cassette back into your machine, make sure there isn't any slack on the tape by gently winding any excess back in by turning the reels, but don't wind it to tightly - the moment you feel resistance, stop.

Hope this helps,

Matt

I cannot erase a tape

Audio cassette tapes are not erasable.
You must record over the recorded portion or side of the tape you want to delete. You can of course record silence if you want a "clean" or "new" tape (turn the volume all the way down and then press the record button).
I found that I could do very fast with some recorders by pressing the record button and simultaneously pressing fast forward.

Won't playback. acts like it's locked up.

This may be corrected by fast-forwarding the tape for a few seconds and then rewinding it back to the point where the issue first started. However, if the issue continues, this could be a sign that the video heads are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use a Sony MiniDV head-cleaning cassette (DVM-12CLD) to clean the video heads.
If the movie continues to stop at the same point even after cleaning the video heads, this could be an indication that there is a problem with the recording on the cassette tape. If this is the case, the data on that portion of the tape cannot be recovered.
NOTES:
  • It is recommended that a high-quality Sony MiniDV tape be used for recording.

Cassettes not rewinding

The heads could also just need a good cleaning, either professionally or using a head cleaner dv tape. It's important to remember to always use the same manufacturer dv tape all the time. Evidently, Sony and Panasonic do not mix well, and the lubricants from those two tapes combined will gum up the works. If you use Sony dv's, always use a Sony head cleaner and vice versa. Cold can also cause those lubricants to gum up. Sometimes simply fast forwarding will loosen things up.
