Question about FrancisFrancis! Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines
Is the coffee good? It's most likely the thermostat. Inside the thermostat sensor is stuck into a hole in the boiler; if it gets detached the thermostat won't work but the coffee machine will. Mine hasn't worked for years but the coffee still tastes fine.

SOURCE: Steam Wand Broken
I soak the steamer tip in flat cola overnight to clean out milk deposits. Run water, not steam through it after that to rinse.
Sometimes I need to use a toothpick to lift off the softened deposits.

Perhaps the heating element is broken. Does it heat up at all? If not, the steamer won't work and there will be nothing for the gauge to register.

The gauge sound like it is the culprit. If the gauge is directly connected to the element also the fault could be drawing power from the heating function.
Simply replace the gauge and it will work correctly.
