thanks for your response. The power cord is plugged in and I have tired the computer in other outlets that I know are working. The pc does not startup at all. normally, I get that whirring sound of the drives/ fans something starting up but I am getting nothing.

There is a flashing green light on the back when it is plugged in.

    thanks

This may sound silly, but you never know what someone has tried...

    - Check the power cord to ensure that it is plugged in
    - Ensure that the power cord/outlet/powerbar is working

Is it not starting at all, or does it come on but not boot up?

Hi. Would prefer more information about your computer before i offer you some advice, but based on your description, it sounds like the power supply has broken down. Assuming this is the only problem, you would need to replace it with a new one, as a power supply is one of the few components which can't be repaired. First though, check that the power cable hasn't come loose, or that the fuse in it hasn't blown. The fuse in the power cable plug should be a 5 amp one, NOT 13. Ring your local Maplins store, and ask to speak to one of their technicians, who can help narrow down the problem for you, over the phone. Then ring your nearset computer repair shop, who will be able to advise you further. You'll have to take the main computer tower to the shop, and leave it with them for a few days. Don't be tempted to let a friend 'have a look at it for you', as he might make things worse.

1. Ask around to see if there was any thunder storms while you were away. If there was it might have blown your power supply, Is the computer power cord connected to a power bar? Or does it plug right into the wall.

2. If you can, unplug everything from the back, unscrew the side of the case, Do you smell anything funny?

3. If you have a car or a dog, the hair might have clogged the power supply fan and it overheated.

I dont have a problem, im trying to figure out how much my computer cost new its a pcv-rs510 desktop

Check this link out for the specs for your computer.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PCV-RS510-Digital-Studio-Pentium/dp/B0001CWI2K?tag=retrevo-20&mode=1_1_g_0_po
Just copy and paste. Right now you can get this unit for $399.00, new it ran around $899.00. But like anything else in the computer world one year you need to upgrade, two years you need upgrade, Three years you need to upgrade, forth year you need to buy a more up to date computer. I replace mine and use my others for back ups or sell them. If your selling yours and it is in good shape you could get up to $399.00 for it. Hope this helps.

Sony vaio pcv-rs420 power supply

tpically yes you can locate the number on your old power supply that represent the type and output and order a replacement at places like this link http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=power+supply
or perhaps if there is a computer repair place close, sometimes they have used ones from computers that has died
