Harmon Kardon AVR-220 Shuts off unexpectantly

Hello,
My neighbour has given me his old Harman Kardon AVR220 A/V Receiver. He knew that there was a problem with it but thought that it would be an easy fix that I could do myself. I have searched online for some solutions but I was unable to find an exact match to my problem.
My Problem is: I have the receiver set up in my livingroom on a surge protector. The receiver shuts off after less than ten minutes. After it shuts off, if I put my hand on the top, it is very hot to the touch (too hot to keep my hand on it for over 10 seconds). I thought that it may be overheating, so I placed a household fan beside it blowing into the slots in the side to cool it off. I then powered it back on and it still shuts off after less than 10 minutes.
The following are some possible solutions that I have read for similar problems. I am looking for solutions that I could do on my own as the unit is no longer under warranty and I do not have a steady income for any expensive servicing (I am a high school student with a newspaper route).

1) Check for exposed and touching speaker wire (I have checked and this is not the case in my situation)
2) Open up the unit and check the fuse and the power supply circuit for black ''burned'' parts.
3) Open up the unit and check the wire that runs from the heat sink to the bias (I'm not sure what the bias is [is it the processor?])
If anybody has any solutions, please post them. Also, if you know that any of the above solutions will or will not work, please let me know.
Thank you so much in advance,
Kyle Mills

The fact that it is putting off that much EXTREME heat tells me that their is a power regulation problem.  I would recommend not using this device at all and disposing of it properly.

The reason for this error was - in a hurry I've plugged the optical input into optical OUT! Double check that your connections in the back are correct and hopefully it fixes your problem.
