Question about Traulsen Refrigeration 48'' Wide x 24'' Deep Reach-In ''Ultra'' Wine Refrigerator With 2 Clear Blac...

1 Answer

Traulsen URS 48 DT Freezer in Freeze/Thaw Cycle/Fridge Side O.K.

We purchased our Traulsen Ultra Side By Side Freezer/Refrigerator (incl ice maker) in 1993. We were away for 3 days over New Years and returned to find that all the food in the freezer section had thawed. The ice cubes in the ice maker drawer had fused together in a lump.  Refrigerator section was normal temperature. We tried reset and fiddling with the two temp dials, as well as turning the two switches on and off. After a couple of minutes or maybe more, we noticed the temp in freezer beginning to drop AND the fan was working. We were relieved, until 4 hours later, the temp began to rise again and the fan was off. It appears the freezer is doing a very dramatic temp up and down cycle. Any suggestions or ideas? We are in a rural area and have asked the local appliance man to come out Monday but he didn't sound like he really had ever dealt with such a high end fridge/freezer (it was rated as a commercial unit when we bought it and we gather from info we  found on the site that they don't support such units any more.  It is 15 years old BUT it cost $10,000 back in '93 so we hope we don't have to replace the whole unit. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you for your quick response AND two good suggestions which I will run past our appliance service man when he comes here this afternoon. I am not sure where the thermostat is or the defrost timer is so perhaps he can locate and check. I will report back later. Thanks again.

As promised, for any Traulsen owners in the future, who may experience my problem - the compressor relay and the defrost timer were replaced (cost $45 Can and $Can respectively) and everything is working normally now!

I'm not intently familiar with this particular brand, but here's some ideas to check. If the thermostat sticks on, the freezer coils can freeze, blocking air flow and jamming circulation fan. This will cause the temp in freezer compartment to rise. When the ice on the coils thaw, the compartment starts to cool again, but the cycle will continue. Another thought is if this unit has a defrost timer that could be defective. Without seeing the unit, it's hard to determine the exact cause.
Hope this helps.

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it can
be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if FREEZER CONTROL is turned WARMER WHICH MAKES THE REF COLDER AND VICE-VERSA. SEE?
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
Make sure back cover is on the fridge. Some take them off and throw them away.
make one out of cardboard if its gone, using the holes of the old one.

Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees
This can cause slow ice making if its too high even tho its freezing everything else at 25 degrees
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
The icemaker is 110v
See if water is in icemaker.
Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects.
If it ejects thenyou need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that
attaches to water line out of wall)
If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker.
If its leaking or no water at icemaker or door either one, then the valve at the rear bottom of ref needs replacing
First I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also if it is getting drinking water to the door but not to the icemaker (or vice versa) Then you need to replace
the water valve at the bottom rear of the fridge. It is a double valve and one side is not working
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.

check for either a bad evap fan motor or a bad fan delay. It could be an under charged freon level too, but I would check the other items first as they usually go bad more frequently.

Fridge not getting cold tempture on high number 7 what should we do to get it runing

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of.

Leak to under ice cube tray causing drawer to freeze shut.

May be your freezer evaporator drain hole is frozen. If this is the case, you can try to install a low heat drain hole heater into the drain hole and connect the wires with the defrost heater.

Frozen foods collecting ice crystals in my freezer

Your freezer is getting too warm during the defrost cycle, causing condensation in your veggies and eventually freezer burn. Likely your door seals are leaking as well after 17 years which introduces even more humidity into your freezer, but I'm assuming your talking about sealed bags of veggies? You need to decrease the temp in your freezer. Get a thermometer and make sure you average around zero degrees. The cause? When is the last time you cleaned the coils at the back of the fridge. Or if they are sealed, perhaps you need to have it serviced. You can try moving your freezer setting to a colder setting it may take care of the problem.
