Question about Computers & Internet

I have a WD MyBook 1 TB external hard drive that I cannot access. Receive an error message in Windows Explorer (Vista Home Premium) that the drive can't be accessed due to an I/O error. It shows up in Windows Explorer but when I try to access it usually locks up Explorer or eventually gives the above message. Is it possible to fix an I/O error? WD Tech Support said that error is caused by a disk partition problem and if I return the drive for warranty replacement I lose all the data. Garry Clarke

First you can try here is to connect the device to a different USB port of your computer or try to connect it on a different computer and if it work fine you can back up all the data from that drive then after that have the drive replace.....

Cause:
This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from an "Advanced Format" (AFD) drive which use 4K physical sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem.

Solution:
It is still possible to use a 2.5 TB drive or larger with Windows 7 Backup and Restore, as long as you don't need to use the drive with Windows XP. Using the WD Quick Formatter tool, select the Factory Default configuration to reformat the drive.

Warning: This tool will erase all data on your drive, so take the necessary precautions.
After formatting the drive to Factory Default mode, the drive will be usable in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, the drive will not be recognized in Windows XP. This is the only way to get Windows 7 Backup and Restore to work correctly.

I purchased two identical hard drives. (MyBook Essentials 2T) The first one works fine, the second, loads the driver and says it is now ready to use, but when I look for it, it is not there. (Show...

What may be happening is it's conflicting drive letters.
Try this.. Plug in the drive. Right click on My Computer, choose Manage. Go to Disk Management under Storage.

Look for the WD drive there, it may have no drive letter associated with it. That would be the problem. Right click on the drive entry and choose Change Drive letter. Pick a Letter.

Exit out and open windows explorer and the drive should now show up.

How can I install the driver for My Passport WD External HDD 500GB online?

It is a "plug-and-play" device, and Windows XP/Vista/7 are "plug-and-play-aware" systems.
So, just connect it, and Windows should recognize it.

Are you getting any error-messages?

OS whont start whit WD 1 TB external drive.

You need to set your boot sequence in the BIOS so that it does not include external drives. Basically your computer is trying to load Windows from the external drive instead of its own internal one.

Your motherboard manual is going to help, if you can't manage it by yourself give me a link to your manual or tell me the model of your motherboard and i will show you what you need to change.

Okay this is a internal SATA drive so what you can do is take it out of its failing case and put it into your computer or buy a new enclosure for it. I have a Mybook TB drive and my works great with no problems. But you can take this to WD western digital as its warrentied foe 3 full years!!
