Question about Verbatim Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Verbatim external hard drive with over 600 gigs on it but it won't let me add a file of 19 gigs. Is there something I can do to get it to accept the file?

I am working on a MAC OS X

No. Your formatting is probably FAT32 and the maximum transfer size is 4gb. What you could do is compress it into different archives (essentially breaking it up) and then copying it into the hard disk. You can do so with winrar or similar programs.

SOURCE: external hard drive won't work with Mac

It needs to be formatted for macs.
I had this problem and with mine as well. (VOX is a horrible company)

One of these two processes should work but I forgot which I did.

Go to spotlight and search for disk utility. If the drive shows up on the left you can click on it then. Click the erase tab. select mac formatting and then click erase.

If it does not show up when you do this you will need to do the same process on a PC.

SOURCE: USB external hard drive does not show up on OS X desktop

You need to be sure that it is formatted as a FAT32 drive and not as a NTFS. When you are in Vista right click on the drive icon and click on properties. You will see NFTS or FAT32 under file system. Your drive must be FAT32 to be recognized by a Mac. Iomega.com has a FAT32 formatting software that you can download for free on your Vista PC and re-format the drive as a FAT32 drive.

SOURCE: External hard drive won't let me transfer files from my Macbook.

Has it only just stopped working or has it been unable to work from the beginning? Are the files you are trying to transfer to the Hard disk already in use? I would recommend reformatting the hard drive. Formatting will put the hard drive back to it's original state. It will wipe all the data though, so make sure you back it up first. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure. Macs are not usually prone to viruses.

SOURCE: cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

You should be able to open windows explorer, navigate to the external hard drive, click on it and see the files which are there. Then you can pick the ones you want to delete and delete them.

Hard drives are fragile, and if they fall sometimes you get lucky and other times no. The only solution is to bring it to a computer store in hopes they can extract your files.

Connect the external drive.
Open 'My Computer'.
One of the icons should be associated with the external drive.
Double-click the icon to "open" the external drive, to show the files/folders on the drive.

The usual limit is exactly 2GB, not 1GB.
It's a limitation of the file-system used for the directory of the disk-drive, when formatted according to the 'FAT32' specifications.

So, copy all the files currently on the Verbatim to your disk-drive.
Then, "reformat" the external (not the "internal") disk-drive, using the 'NTFS' file-system. This file-system has a maximum-file-size limitation for one file that is _much_ larger than the capacity of your Verbatim.

Then, copy all the "saved" files back onto the Verbatim.

Finally, copy your "large" files onto the Verbatim.

Are you familiar with hidden files and/or using the Terminal application? Hidden files could be the cause of your disk usage and you could use Terminal to verify and remove the files. The easiest way to erase the drive and restore the space, though, is to use Disk Utility and erase the partition. Open Disk Utility Select the Volume name Click the Erase tab Click the Erase button BE SURE YOU HAVE NOTHING ON THE DRIVE THAT YOU WANT! Please let me know if this helps or if you have more questions.
