You have to take the unit apart--I would suggest you Google this by model number and look on You Tube who has video instructions for lots of equipment for replacing parts.

The first hurdle may be a lot of these units use special security bolts that require a special bit just to get things apart.

What is the most critical aspect in choosing a replacement magnetron ?

You can't install a magnetron that exceeds the capacity of the high voltage power supply. It's also unwise to install one of a higher output power than the original. Make sure any replacement is for a non-commercial oven, as some commercial ovens have used magnetrons with higher voltage and current ratings.

Not heating

Usually one of three things and not in any order:

The diode commonly used in most microwaves= it cannot be shorted and work.

The inverter board which powers the Magnetron.

The magnetron itself which does the work and can only be tested for sure by replacing.

Microwave runs lights come on but it doesnt heat up any food

It shows that magnetron is not operating, check high voltage diode grounded from the high voltage capacitor by replacing the same with same specification,if problem remains then check connection leads connected with magnetron for loose or corrosion, finally check by replacing the magnetron.

Not geting hot

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.

Sharp over the range microwave, no heat when turned on an a loud humming noise

HI, there are two issues here. the Magnetron tube and the noise filter has failed.

Just to make sure of the Magnetron failure, expose the device and, check the Magnetron temp fuse located near the device. this fuse will show no continuity when tested if faulty. if it testes out ok, replace the magnetron.

Everything seems to be working but it doesn't heat anything

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.
