Question about Frigidaire Washing Machines
If it is a top loading unit when you open the lid look along the back edge and there should be a button type switch that you can manually push down with your finger while the lid is open. While deprressing it turn on unit to see if it starts.
If its a front load look where in the same spot along the edge where the hinges are for some type of button to press and repeat. It may also be where the latch catches and locks the door and you may have to insert something. While pressing the button with the door open try to start unit. If it starts immediately release the switch so water will not get you wet.
If the unit starts with either test your switch would be ok.

The door is in two parts outer and inner, i think there are a couple of screws on the inside, if not it just prises apart, then undo the two screws on the latch, please take note how it is fitted because they can be confusing, best buy the new one first.

The following link explains how to replace the door latch on a Whirlpool front loader:
This is a very simple repair. I'm surprised at the cost of the labor you were quoted. An experienced technician can replace one of these latches in 30 minutes or less.
An alternate method of the replacing the latch is the remove the top panel of the washer and work down through the top. Due to variations in design features between models, this isn't always possible. If you want to remove the top panel, just locate and remove the three screws that hold the panel in place in the rear of the washer. With the screws removed, the panel will slide back, then lift off. If you have access the latch assembly from the top, you can attempt the repair using this method.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Depending on which part has gone, some hotpoints door trim post snaps which makes too much play not allowing door to open, in this case needs new door trim. others need drum to be empty of all Water, or could be door interlock faulty .give it a slight bang with your hand to ease open, remember has a 3 min delay on door....

Thank you for your inquiry, Larry!
From the information you have provided your Frigidaire washer is humming when you attempt to start a cycle. This could be a possible issue with door latch or control board. Does the washer display any error codes? I would recommend checking for any damages or cracks along the door strike or door latch that could cause the washer to not show a connection between the two. If there is no damage, you would need to disassemble your washer and test out the control panel and door latch. I hope this information is helpful to you. -Matt

Your machine's latch may be blocked by something acting like the car door latch described above. It may be the switch has broken and is the "culprit".
