Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

Motor hums doesn't start

Are there any replaceable parts on this motor (like brushes), or do you have to replace the entire motor? The motor will run if you spin it by hand. But won't start on its own.

SOURCE: Dryer hums and won't work

can you remove the belt and run it/..look at the motor if it is spinning. let me know. normally, if it hums, its the motor which is not starting, when you replaced the motor, im sure it has its own centrifugal switch and starting capacitor. did you replaced the starting capacitor? could be open.

SOURCE: Heatman - you comments are

it could be the extra weight on the motor and the motor is bad,try this, open the door, push the door switch in with one hand and spin the drum with the other hand and have someone push the start button,if it runs and most of the time it does because you're helping it along you need a new more thing,if the filter is in front, remove the duct that the lint filter slides into and spin the drum,if the blower wheel moves with the drum you have a bad motor,if it doesn't you have something stuck in the blower wheel and it jams up the motor because it's attached to the motor shaft.

if your sure the thermal fuse is good,, check the start switch,, making sure the dryer select setting is set to something other than off, also, the door switch . you can Jumper both these switches, I'd try the door switch first as they go out more often . if you have a meter and want to test the switch Some door switches have only two metal prongs extending from the body, while others have three. Those with three terminals will have a common (COM) terminal, a normally closed (N.C.) terminal, and a normally open (N.O.) terminal. Those switches with only two terminals will have either a common terminal and a normally open terminal, or a common terminal and a normally closed terminal. We are providing directions for testing a door switch with three terminals. If you are dealing with a door switch that has only two terminals, ignore the part of this test that does not apply to you.Use your ohmmeter to test your switch for continuity. Begin by setting your ohmmeter to measure resistance at a scale of R x 1. If yours is a two-wire switch, touch each tester probe to each of the switch's terminals. You should receive a reading of infinity. While the probes are still touching the switch's terminals, press in on and hold the switch. The reading should change to zero.

Have a whirlpool washer that now hums when I turn the cycle on, no water just a hum

I had a similar problem - had to get a technician out - there was a valve at the back of the machine that allows the machine to fill. It had split (apparently its a common problem? there are separate valves for hot and cold water, so I'm not sure if using a different cycle choice (ie cold only), may let the machine fill?). 10 minute fix job

D28770 dewalt does not turn the blade. Light works and switch works but not even a hum from the motor.

Check the brushes, if they are worn down to where they are not making good contact with the armature, the motor won't work.
If the brushes are OK you may have to have the armature tested to make sure it doesn't have a short in it.

Makes a humming noise but doesn't turn

Try this, open the dryer door and hold down the door light switch. Turn on the dryer and press start. When you hear the motor humming, turn the drum clockwise with your hand to see if it will turn. If itruns, you have a bad motor and will need to be replaced. If it doesn't turn, something is jammedinside and you will need to disassemble the unit to find the jam.
Hope this helps.

I must have gotten a pit stuck however when I feel in there there's nothing left n there. There's power to it because it hums but it doesn't chop. Any suggestions.

Put a wood broomstick down in the opening, or use allen wrench on bottom of motor, and see if you can free up the cutter disk.
You want the disk to rotate freely.
The use vacuum cleaner hose to make sure all the small stuff is removed.
If the disk rotates freely, but the motor will not start, and the motor just hums, then motor winding has gone bad, and motor is overheating each time it hums. Replace disposal.
I wrote ez disposal replacement steps from when I worked apartment maintenance.
