This was very dangerous, and yes this could have caused all sorts of problems to any appliance that was plugged in and switched on at the time, you should report the engineer to edf and it may be possible (if you can get an electrician to confirm that the faults you've had since were cause by reverse polarity) to make a claim for compensation against edf
