Codec missing

If you know the name of the codec or its ID (known as a FourCC identifier for video codecs or a WaveFormat identifier for audio codecs), try searching the Internet. You can often go to a codec manufacturer's website to download the most recent version of a codec.

No sound while watching movie

Most likely you are missing what is called an audio codec, it is a way for the player you're using to interpret the sound signal from the video.
Downloading a full audio/video codec pack will solve almost all problems. Go to download.com and search for codec pack, from the list select windows essential media codec pack , download and install. If this does not work for you the next best option is to download a new video player, the best one out there is free and is called VLC media player and can also be found on download.com . These 2 options solve 99% of problems with video/sound issues, be sure to try rebooting the computer if they do not seem to have worked and try playing the video again.
hope this was helpful.

My computer can play system sounds but cannot play sounds from videos,cds,etc..

sounds like you're using windows media player which is missing a lot of codecs. try installing a simple player loaded with codecs like videolan. be cautious of downloading third party codec packages from the web. they can be a mess to your system.

Video playback

This means that you may have used a file format that the device does not support. Try looking on the Sony website on the specs to see what kind of file types it takes. Then try again with the proper formats.

Media players do not play sounds

Ah yes, the bane of multimedia files and codecs. First thing you need to do is download Gspot. Drop the file into Gspot and identify exactly what the audio codec is. Once you do that, then you can download it. Careful though, you can get viruses or get otherwise currupted/inoperable codecs if you don't get the right ones.

Playing video

There are literally hundreds of audio and video codecs out there,
not to mention the dozens of possible media containers
(file-formats) to hold and synchronize the audio and video
streams in a movie.

1) The first step is to identify the codecs and container interfaces
needed to play each file.

2) Download a copy of the G-SPOT codec information
appliance from:

http://gspot.headbands.com/

3) Use this awesome tool to identify the codecs and container,

then download the correct codecs.

You can also test/play the movie from within GSPot.

4) Finally, keep in mind that media from P2P downloads
is often corrupt (or worse) which may be the reason
the audio does not work. The file type could also be
mislabeled or have the wrong extension.

5) I recomend emule over lime wire, with an inter-connected
VLC player. The VLC player is very good at playing
incomplete or damaged movies and audio. (it is free)

6) Finally, when downloading movies, alway DL more than
one version at the same time, hoping one will work.

prefer larger files for better quality, and avoid small files
like the plague because the are often malware.

A movie should be at least 5 MB per minute. Anything
smaller than that is highly suspect.
most formats, except real-media.

Hope this helps

Screen goes blank

Video on a computer is comprised of two components, known as codecs. The audio codec decodes the audio, and the video codec decodes the sound. If one of these codecs is missing or corrupted, then either the sound or the video won't work. I'm surprised it's happening with youtube since their video is quite a generic format. If you can get hold of a file where this happens, there is a utility called GSpot which takes the file and tries to render it, reporting detailed failures where a codec is not working or not found. Try running your piece of video through that and googling the results, you will likely be able to find a codec that fixes your problem.
