HOW TO RETRIEVE A PASSWORD FROM, OR CHANGE THE PASSWORD ON A WIRELESS ROUTER

How to retrieve a password or change the password for a wireless network from the router

Get an ethernet cable and plug your computer to the router with it..Click on your browser and in the address bar type the IP address for your particular router. (You can find this by googling the make and model of your router and the words IP ADDRESS.)

you will then be presented with the page after which you will have access to the router's control software. The page asks for username and password, they should, if they have not been altered from default, both be the word admin

Having entered these and pressed the enter button you should be in the control menus. Look for the wireless networking option, find it , click on it and you should find yourself in a screen on which your network's ID, (also known as SSID,) and password are displayed.
There may or may not be the option of turning the radio / wireless section off
temporarily...if it is available click on it to stop the wireless from broadcasting...if the option is not listed it obviously cannot be done!
Next, highlight the network password and delete it, then insert your new password, making a note of it and remembering that it will be case sensitive.
Make sure you SAVE THE CHANGES
Next ... If you have shut wireless/radio down reactivate it.
Then exit the utility.
Advanced users might want to create a password for getting into the router.
Anyway, after having exited detach the ethernet lead and click on your browser and click on the wireless networking/connection icon in the system tray, highlight your network and click on the connect button. You will then be presented with the option of entering your new password which should be entered exactly as you wrote it when in the router. You should, after a wait of a few seconds, be connected to the internet. Hide the new password and your ethernet cable if you have not put a new admin password on the router.
Then, BOBS YOUR UNCLE.

I wan't to use the signal from my router on my desktop for my tabler , But I forgot my password ?

If you have a laptop or other device which has previously accessed the wireless router, you should be able to retrieve the router security key (password) from that device.

If that device is running Windows Vista/7/8, you can read the security key directly. In the system tray (lower right corner), click on the Wi-Fi signal icon, then right-click on the entry for your router, and select "Properties". When the properties box appears, the security key will be hidden; to display it, place a check in the "Show Characters" box. (See diagrams 1&2, below.)

Alternatively, you can install a software program on a computer that has accessed the router, in order to retrieve the security key. My suggestion is "WirelessKeyView", a Windows freeware program from Nirsoft. See: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html That will display all of the router security keys stored in that computer, under the "Key ASCII" column. (See diagram 3, below.)

I need to find my network password can you help?

The password should be stored in any computer which has connected to that router via wireless.

If that computer has Windows 7, there is a built-in function to display the password. Go to:
Start > Control Panel > Network & sharing > Manage wireless
That will being up a list of routers. Find the correct one, right-click and select "Properties".

That will bring up an info box for that router. Select the "Security" tab, The security key (password) will be hidden behind asterisks. Place a check in the box for "Show characters". That will display the password

If the computer which has connected to the router has an older operating system (Vista or Windows XP), then you may not have that built-in password display feature. But you may still be able retrieve the password by installing some specialized software.

Is there any way to find out what the current username & password are? I prefer not to reset the router because we have a gamebox attached to the router now & I don't want to goof it up.

Do you have at least one computer which has connected to that router via wireless? If so, the password should be stored in that computer.

Start > Control Panel > Network & sharing > Manage wireless

I have got a 2nd laptop and cant remenber my password to connect it to my wireless connection

If yuor first laptop is able to connect then try installing SIW on it and click the PASSWORDS link to see if it will retrieve the wireless password off the first laptop.
If not, and you cannot get into the router either, you will need to reset the netgear to factory by depressing the reset button in the back for 10 seconds, which resets the login to 'admin' and the password to 'password' to allow access to the router, and setting the wireless security to NONE - allowing you to change it to something you can remember.

If you are able to get into the router, but simply cannot remember the wireless password, you can reset it to something else without resetting the router through the wireless security menu in the router. You will need to then set both laptops to use the new password.
