Instructions for making a buttonhole

The method will depend on your make & model machine, although the vintage sewing machine buttonhole method will work on all zig-zag machines (just requires manually measuring and adjusting the stitch length & width during the process):

Be sure there is a stabilizer between the fabric where the buttonhole is located so the fabric will not stretch or tear.

How do I make a button hole

Put on your buttonhole foot. Slide the foot plate back and set the button in the back...this is how the machine knows how big a buttonhole to make. Pull down the buttonhole lever, gray plastic, which is to the left of the needle. Now use the stitch selector to select the buttonhole. Test your machine on a piece of scrap fabric to make sure your buttonhole function works, before trying to sew on your garment. If it does not work, then bring your machine in to your local Baby Lock dealer.

My Singer 2950 buttonhol-er stitches only one side of the buttonhole. It does not reverse and finish the buttonhole. What to do??

Have you pulled down the buttonhole trigger lever at the back of the sewing area? most modern machines have one of these - when you use it with the button hole foot, you'll see the foot has a little piece that sticks out and triggers the lever to begin stitching the reverse bead and bar tack of the buttonhole.

When I press the button to make a buttonhole and step on the power, all I get is a beep. How do I make a buttonhole in that one easy step?!

Is there a little arm you need to pull down behind the presser foot? And a buttonhole foot that needs to go onto the machine?

Do you have a manual for it to check out the buttonhole procedure? try this link
http://www.singerco.com/resources/buttonhole.html for some instructions and images but always good to have the machines manual if you can get one.

Many of the machines with the one step buttonhole function have a white plastic slide type foot and the buttonhole lever that you pull down. You put a button into a clip at the back of the foot to "measure" the buttonhole length. Then start sewing, the machine will do a bartack, then start backwards, the pulldown lever will then connect with the foot when it gets to the right length, start the end bartack, then reverse back up the other side of the buttonhole and finish off when it comes back to the start of the foot.

The Singer will probably be some variation of this system, hope this helps.

I can't find my manual and I need to know how to do button holes

You could try to locate a manual on the web or try sewing.about.com, there is lots of information on this website.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with this model machine at all.

But if it is an automatic buttonholer model, there is probably a special buttonhole foot in your accessory box? Is it a long white plastic device where you put a button in the back to get the correct lenth. If yes, then put it on the machine and there will also be a lever at the left side of the presser foot that you need to pull down. This buttonhole style sews the bar tack, then one side, the end tack, then the other side and works backwards from the starting point.

Now check your machine dial settings, there is probably a buttonhole icon?

You might be able to muddle through this way?

I have temporarily misplaced the instruction manual to my White 979 sewing machine. I need to put this shirt in todays mail and I have forgotten the direction to make a buttonhole. I s there a place I...

Automatic BUTTONHOLE making with 979:
  1. Carefully mark the position of buttonhole on your garment.
  2. Slide the button carrier and insert the button.
  3. Attach the buttonhole foot.
  4. Place the garment under the foot so that the needle pierces the fabric at the beginning of buttonhole.
  5. Lower the buttonhole lever and the presser foot lever.
  6. Push the buttonhole lever away from you.
  7. Start machine to complete entire buttonhole.
NOTE:
  • While making buttonholes, maintain an even sewing speed for uniform buttonholes.
  • When buttonholes are completed, be sure to push up the buttonhole lever as gar as it can go.

I cant figure out how to install the buttonhole foot

Do you just need to attach it to the machine? Or are you having trouble using the foot itself?
It attaches the same way the other feet attach. Remove any foot that may still be attached to the machine. On the buttonhole foot look for the small silver pin that sits on the sliding piece with the small red line marks on it. Lift up your presser foot lever and attach the buttonhole foot's silver pin the same way you would attach any other foot.

As far as using the foot itself place your button on the back sliding piece snuggly till it fits in without falling out, adjust as needed. Pull the bottonhole lever down (it's located on the machine opposite the side of the presser foot lever) so that it rests behind the first lever on the buttonhole foot (small plastic piece raised on the left hand side of the foot that doesn't move). Slide the feed dog switch on the back of your machine so the feed dogs go down. Select your stitch and go. The machine automatically stops when done.

Hope this helps!

I have a Singer model 9910 and am not able to make a buttonhole on the setting for #61. The buttonhole seems to be inserted properly and the foot is lowered but the machine just beeps and will not sew.

Re your buttonhole foot - please note the following:

- This foot comes with a metal underplate.

- Place the fabric between the foot and the underplate.

- I am assuming that you have the buttonhole lever pulled down.

-Note: The silver coloured buttonhole lever is directly behind the needle threader. Pull it all the way down.

-When u have all the above in place, start the buttonhole. When it finishes the first side, gently push the foot back, so it reverses. I know this sounds strange, but if you have slightly bent the underplate you will need to do this.

- The directions are in the manual on page 60.

Buttonhole instructions needed for Singer 7422 Advance

These are the exact instructions from the Manual. 1. Select one of buttonhole patterns.
2. Replace the presser foot with the buttonhole foot. (Install presser foot with little red mark towards the front)
3. Insert the button into the buttonhole foot. (the part located in the back crescent shaped)
4. Lower the buttonhole lever (to the left of the needle) so that it drops down vertically between the stoppers A and B.
5. Carefully mark the position of buttonhole on your garment.
6. Place the fabric under the foot. Pull out the bobbin thread underneath the fabric to a length of about 4 inches to the rear.
7. Align the buttonhole mark on the fabric with the mark on the buttonhole foot, and then lower the buttonhole foot.
8. While holding the top thread, start the machine.
*Sewing will be completed automatically.
9. When sewing is finished, use a buttonhole opener to open up the frabric in the center of the buttonhole. Be careful not to cut anyt of the seam thread.
I hope this helps.
