Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Camera turns on, and then turns off again right away

My M1033 had the same problem...I found a blog about someone using air to clean around the lens area...I cleaned my lens very thoroughly and noticed some gunk and once I cleaned this off, the camera seems to work like new!

Push on button. Camera turns on, lens pops out.

Most of these kinds of errors come as a result of some kind of impact, sand or dirt exposure, possible water damage, or some other problem with the lens.
There is a possibility that the lens is off track.
Try pulling or pushing (not too hard either way) and see if it may be off track and return it to the correct setting.
Since it is not working anyway, try the above a few times and then test the camera to work right.
I have fixed more than one with similar (off track problems) and they worked good after wards.
Worth a try.
If nothing works, I suggest to sell it (include all that you have with the sale) on a site such as Ebay as parts, or as is repair. It should bring something like $20.00 to $50.00. The LCD is worth something over $15.00 alone. The other parts of the camera has value to those who repair cameras.

You must have cleaned/repaired by a professional.

Lens error restart camera but it just switches off same problem. dings and turns it self off. Canon PowerShot® SD850 IS Digital Camera. Lens cover is only partially closed. Possibly sand in mechanism...

Hi

Your lens is defective needs to be cleaned, repaired or replaced. If you got sand in the gears it will definitely jam up the lens! Sometimes you can tear down the lens and clean out the sand, and if none of the gears are damaged the lens will then work properly again.

There are online places that will do it for a decent price and there are others that overcharge by way too much.

I know this because I OWN ONE that charges a reasonable price to do the repair! (Google 'darntoothysam')

Just let us know if we can help! Good luck from

Have Kenwood CD UD-405 not used for many years. Will not now play CDs or sometimes a few tracks then cuts out stating *NO DISC". Seems fine electronically. Tried switched on for several days to remove...

Seemed to have solved problem by using lens cleaning disc. Had no effect at first but kept trying it and eventually started working. Many cut outs but kept repeating and eventually played without cut outs.

Error 99 only when flash pops up

I know what you two are talking about. I ordered a Canon EOS 300d from a site called "Keh" and I had never used one before... so I get it in the mail on time. The camera works fine for a few minutes then I get an "error 99" and can't do jack with the camera. I researched online and even called keh ... I read and heard that it has to do with the lens... so I sen't the camera back and got my money.
