If your laptop works fine while plugged in but stops working while unplugged it's likely that either your laptop battery is bad or your laptop is not charging the battery properly.

Below are steps that can be taken to help identify the cause of this issue.

Leave power plugged in

Make sure the computer has been charging from the power plug for at least two hours before attempting to unplug it.

Remove and reconnect battery

In some situations the battery can become loose.
Removing it and then put it back into the laptop.

Third-party utility

Use a third-party battery utility to determine the total capacity of the battery.

For example, BatteryCare is a free software utility capable of doing this.

Replace battery or AC adapter

If your computer is still in warranty we suggest skipping to the next step.

If the above steps have been completed, we suggest replacing the battery in the computer or AC adapter.

In most situations it's a bad battery.

Restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

To perform a system restore, follow these steps:

1.Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

2.On the General tab, click Launch System Restore.

3.Select Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

4.Calendar dates in bold are possible restore points. Click the most recent one to view system restore information.

5.Select a system checkpoint or an installation restore point, and then click Next.

6.Close all other programs.

7.To start the system restore, click Next.

8.Your computer restarts.

Repeat steps 1 through 8 until you fix your configuration issue.

if it does not start in safe mode it could well be a hardware problem

Check all power and data leads from motherboard to hard drive and all of your cd/dvd drives make sure connections are secure dust free and not faulty

computers need all power and data to travel through every working device and to finish its cycle

so any faulty lead will end in computer error or shutdown / fail to boot or to reboot on a cycle

make sure your computers RAM modules are securely seated with no dust in the sockets also the Cmos battery has charge and seated with no dust in the sockets

some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

might be getting hot check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-February-2012/1490

or it might even be a virus until you have your laptop up and runing you wont be able to run your antivirus software.

another possible reason could be a memory dump running to many programs at the on time placing to much strain on the CPU central processing unit installing more ram will overcome this or uninstalling unecessary programs the other option.

If you're not sure if a module is right for your system use the

Crucial Memory Advisor tool for a list of guaranteed compatible modules

you should always ask for a guarantee on compatibility before purchasing any ram and buy working pairs if possible

Hope this helps

OUCH... Might need a new harddrive or motherboard. Does it even let you go into the bios? Maybe you can do a full reinstall to save you the dough.

SOURCE: I bought a Dell inspiron 400 laptop. I will boot

I would take the hard drive to a computer repair shop and let them scan the HDD and remove the infections. They can also repair the windows installation files so it will boot back up. Either way, you do not have to change out the memory unless you want to install more.

My son put a password on my Dell inspiron n4030 and he forgot how can i factory reset it without a password

See link below for a possible solution. Please note: virtually any solution will require another computer to download software and create a bootable CD or DVD. Your initial boot screen should give you the key or keys to press to change the boot sequence and force a CD or DVD boot.

Dell Inspiron N4030 asking me for BIOS password, i dont even rember making one.....I cant Boot to install a new version of Windows and I'm getting P-Offed!! Help please

You may have to find the reset disk or may have to do a clean instal in which case is not fun however
If there was no passowrd created by you always remember to go the easies route >>> My advice look @ the operation manual if no luck then at that point you will have to >>>>> ; )
Dell XP = Ctrl+F11Dell Vista = F8
EEEPC = Esc
Compaq = F11
HP Desktop Vista = F11
Emachine = F10
Acer = Alt+F10

Every manufacture has or uses different Function Key combinations to do a Factory Default Recovery. Also if it didn't come with disks there is normally a program in the menus to create your own set of recovery CDs. This must be done before you ever put anything on the recovery partition d: , if you used d: for anything you need to remove what you put there or the recovery will not function.

Starting problem

Immediately after seeing the Dell logo, keep tapping the 'F8' key,
until you see a "menu" (white text over a black background)
giving "startup" options for Windows XP.

Select "Safe Mode" and see if you can start in that mode.
Then, use "System Restore" to go "back" in time, to the most-recent checkpoint (date/time) where your computer _DID_ work.

Restore to that point, and restart.
