What kind of batteries does the schwinn Airdyne take its about 22 yrs old?

Most computer console batteries for Airdynes are AA, you'll have to open up the console/meter housing in the back to replace them. I will be attaching a link to a diagram of the housing. Hope this helps, sincerely SportSmith..

How to replace a chain with master link on a Schwinn Airdyne

Airdyne Chain Replacement with Master link

This video will demonstrate how to replace the chain with master link on a Schwinn Airdyne.
  • First remove the cotter pin and clevis pin from the user's right handlebar. Then lower the connecting arm and handlebar.
Caution: be sure to hold the handlebar as it will come loose after removal of the above parts.
  • Remove the connecting arm and pedal and crank arm by removing the wedge pin. To simplify this process loosen the nut and tap on it with a small hammer until the pin is loosened.
  • Remove the nut, wedge pin, crank arm and connecting arm.
  • Next remove the chain guard; there are three screws attaching it as shown in the video.
  • Remove the chain by locating the master link. Remove the lock pin and the cover, and then disconnect the chain.
  • Place the new chain on the sprockets as shown in the video.
  • Install the master link, cover and lock.
  • Re-install the chain guard and attaching screws.
  • Re-assemble the connecting arm to the handlebar and eccentric.
  • Be sure the brass bushing is installed in the front inner side of the connecting arm before installing the clevis pin and cotter pin.
  • Install the crank arm with pedal.
Be sure when completing this step that the crank arm is installed in the opposite position as the users left side crank arm.
  • Install the nut onto the wedge pin and tighten.
  • This completes the procedure.

User Guide/Manual for Schwinn Airdyne AD3

Schwinn Fitness has many of their manuals here: http://www.schwinnfitness.com/schwinn_fitness_us/customerservice/manualsen.jsp . The direct link to the owner's manual for all Airdyne exercise bikes is available here: http://download.nautilus.com/supportdocs/OM/Schwinn/SCH_Airdyne_Evolution_OM_web.pdf . If you need the assembly directions, see the Airdyne AD4 guide: http://download.nautilus.com/supportdocs/AM/Schwinn/SCH.Airdyne.AD4.AM.EN.pdf . The AD3 and AD4 are very similar.

I hope this helps.

Squeaking belt on airdyne bike

I love my Schwinn Evo Comp AirDyne. After 2 years it suddenly developed a bad squeak and about .5" of increased play in the pedals (ie the pedal could rotate back and forth about .5" before turning the fan). Both these symptoms were caused by a broken spring in the chain tensioner. (Schwinn pn 13000371. See part 80 in blowup 5 of http://www.fitnessrepairparts.com/diagram/114 ~$9).
To replace this:
  1. disconnect the right hand (as you sit on it) connecting arm (ie the piece that connects the pedal to the big handle) from the lever arm (ie the big handle you pull back and forth) by removing the connecting bolt with an Allen head wrench and an adjustable wrench. Note the order of the three internal washers as you remove the connecting bolt. Rotate the connecting arm towards the back of the bike to get it out of the way.
  2. remove the four phillips head bolts that hold down large right hand plastic cover. With the connecting arm out of the way this cover can be pulled far enough out to gain access to the chain tensioner.
  3. remove the broken spring and replace it. I fashioned a similar spring with less tension which seems to work as a kluge. The original spring broke at the outermost loop, so I might have been able to reuse it by just bending down another loop.
  4. could lube the chain while you are in there, but you can also lube it anytime from the other side
  5. put it all back together

My Father has a schwinn Airdyne. the pedal was loose, I bought a new piece that fits through the pedal, replaced it but it is still loose. I think the medal in the crank wheel is worn...... Because the...

There is a metal shim needed in the bike/pedal that has to be tapped in to keep the pedal tight. If you dad has used the bike for several hundred miles and/or his feet might actually bend the pedals over time (weight), it is possible the metal piece that the pedal attaches to could become bent slightly, and I have seen a few bikes, that need to be taken to the bike repair store (call a large bicycle/itness store) that has a good repair shop and they often can repair these, but rarely less than $125 for an Airdyne repair/tuneup.
