Question about Audio Players & Recorders
Have open on bench- I have no schematics or Service manual. Looks like there are mechanically operated state type switches in the unit. All it does since it came in is in play mode it makes a squealing sound but no play motor movement- no voltage is applied to the motor. The fast wind and rewind do work. The only belt in the unit is fine. This is a motor control or switching problem. This is the first time I have seen one of these. Any ideas?

The belts will have failed. You will need to replace them for the deck to be reliable. If you are mechanically minded I can talk you through it... You giving me a FixYa rating will help my profile and loosen my lips on how to overhaul your deck. :)

It sounds like the drive belts on the deck have broken (not allowing playing, FF or REW) and/or the tape got "eaten" meaning the tape itself has wound itself around the rollers and cannot free itself. I strongly doubt this is an electrical issue. Definately sounds mechanical.
As far as the door not opening, there's usually a hook that holds the door closed. If the unit is mostly disassembled, look near one of the sides of the door for a metal hook. It's normally spring loaded and can be moved manually. That should free the door. If your tape was eaten, it might take some gentle persuasion to unwrap it from the rollers.

Belts are prone to harden over time, like 10 years. The belt probably broke.
If you don't feel comfortable removing the housing yourself, take it to a repair shop.

Unit probably needs belts. Over time, belts may become slack or decompose into tar-like compound. In this case, the deck will need to be cleaned and belts replaced. Take to pro/tech

Just bought a unit from a thrift store. Found same problem; FF & RW OK, but play engages then stops. Also noticed buzzing noise when power turned on. Opened unit, found broken capstan drive belt. FF & RW driven from different motor. Buzz was drive motor running freely with no load - when power is on, capstan is driven all the time for fast play/record start. Replaced with rubber band, and it works --- now looking for replacement belt.
