I'll need the model number to solve this completely, but here's the first try:
1. Check the "aspect ratio" setting. Usually there's 4 settings: Normal, Wide, Stretch, and Zoom. Flip between those to check which is best.
2. If you've got your computer hooked into it, under the options there's a "fine sync" option, that will allow you to fine-set the resolution. Use the "clock" and "h-sync" option.

Try those, and if you can give me the model number, I can be of more assistance.

Picture seems to big for TV.cant read bottom words on screen and words are cut off on side also. Cant see scrores on any sports or read peoples names on bottom of the screen

Using the menu or settings button on your remote, access the TV's menu and find the area for picture settings and zoom. You're likely set to a zoom mode, so cycle through the options until you find the zoom setting that sizes to your TV best. (On most widescreens, the best picture is often on the setting 'panarama.'

I can't get the zoom to decrease on my tv. is it a problem with the tv, or the cable box?

This is the TV. Look for an aspect ratio or picture size or other wording button on the TV's remote control and READ your TV owner's manual. John
