If you have a Chraftsman/Liftmaster check the down limit:
If the light bulb(s) on your operator are on the front and/or back, the limit adjustment screw is on the left side of the operator (looking from the back of the operator and facing  the garage door).. If the lights are on the sides of the operator then the limit adjustment screw is on the left side (looking from the back of the operator and facing  the garage door).
Check the up and  down force:

The door starts down, but when I release the control button from the wall, it goes back up. If I hold it until the door is all the way down and settled, it stays. AND, the remote does not work at all. ...

I don't know what the range adjustment is but you need to put the down force control back where it was and check your door sensors. If the main light is flashing 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit.

The garage door goes all the way down but then goes right back up - it does not close

Had similar problem. Re-program travel and force limits. Make sure that travel limit (down) does not go too far (thus excessive force). Apparently this system has a force sensor that senses if there is something in the way of the door. This is different from the safety sensor "eyes". The problem in your setup is that you have programmed the door to travel down too much and he system looses its ability to use force sensor. Adjust travel limit (down) to a little less travel and you will be fine.

Sears technical support for craftsman products- Will not work with car and remote. Goes down with internal contol, but goes right back up. Tried resetting it fro car and remote, with no results

Sounds like you have a couple problems. The remotes not working is probably the logic board. The door coming right back up is either the door sensors misaligned or the door is traveling too far and hitting the floor.

My older Craftsman garage door opener comes down about 6" & then goes back up. I just replaced all the rollers o& the opener worked fine. Then I tightened the chain on the opener & it worked ok...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

Garage door opener will not go down.

first try to add some pressure by turning knob on back of operator, if this does not help inspect circuit board look for indication of a burn some times this is just a brown or dark yellow line in board check gear also and look for shavings... gear kits and circuit boards are not cheap yet easy to install.

Changed gear box in craftsman garage door opener

you did not give enough info. If it closes completely and right away goes up, if bulb blinking. if it is, something on door is blocking safety beam. If light is not blinking, DECREASE down travel.

it works but it is annoying: you will have to hold down the button on wired wall unit. hold it until the door closes. also if you have the keypad outside it also works the same way, type code and hold the enter button
