Whenever i try and play a dvd on my laptop the drive makes a series of beeping noises then some grunting noises and keeps repeating this and fails to recognise that there is a disc in the drive.

You need to count the number of beeps and post them in a comment so that we may better assist you.  The beeps are indicating an error code and we need to know which one it is.  Also post all information about your drive, model, make etc.  and or computer year make model.

First make sure the drive is clean. Uninsall the drive from the device manager. also go to the registry and delete the lower and the upper filter. Restart your computer and then check.

If you still have the same problem uninstall the CD burning software like Nero or roxio.

Thanks

Typically, the grunting would indicate a bad drive. Replace it. They're fairly inexpensive nowadays ($20-$30).

Weird beeping noises

Need to know what make and model of laptop you have. It could be the CD drive's internal hardware, or the hard drive beginning to fail, or even a failing fan. You may be able to get MSI to repair it for free if you call them (If it's a warranty issue).

You should make a back up of anything important on your laptop if it's about to fail...

Connect the 320GB HDD before switching ON the laptop and try to repair using scandisk option to repair the drive. Also use chkdsk /f option in command line mode.

Pavilion dv2125nr won't boot

it could be dead mobo, it's actually the most probable cause of your problem, but there is this thing i've encountered with HP several times already. i know it's a long shot, but i'd like you to try and boot the laptop up after you've removed the DVD-drive. if this works, it's the DVD-drive that's broken, if not, it'll be the mobo...

Toshiba laptop is slow and keeps making strange noises!

When any portion of the electronic package begins or is failing it can very well cause other problems. The different sections of your laptop all share power supply lines, cpu freq lines and memory lines. I agree that the hard drive could also be a culprit. Now you'll need to determine if this is an actual hard drive physical problem or is it virus' and spyware playing with the operating system. Is this what you paid that company to do? If so I'd be back there is a minute. What are the beep codes you're hearing?

Computer

hi gavo,
since its still new, you still have the receipt with you right? better bring it back to where you bought it and let them check it instead, we dont like to void the warranty. :)

were you able to use it even just once? try a different cd, if you use cd in your first attempt, try dvd the next, try movie cd or audio cd, just to isolate the problem.

just post your feedback here,

Dvd recorder grunting, not recording

May be mechanical failure in the sled area. The cause may be dirt or warn parts.

Difficult to really comment properly on this one...
