Water backs up to the shower when the internal dimension (ID) of the pipe between the valve and the spout is not large enough to handle the volume of water that is running through the valve. My guess is you used pex. You should have used galvanized or copper pipe. The ID of galvanized pipe is 5/8"; copper pipe is just over a 1/2" ID. This will fix the problem. If this pipe is no longer accessible, you may be able to fix this one other way, by limiting the volume of water that is supplied to the valve. Remove the handle and the escutcheon plate. Turn screw on each side of the valve clockwise until fully closed; this will shut the water off to the valve. Now, put the handle back on and turn the faucet on full mix; water should not be running. Now turn each screw 90 degrees; water will begin to flow. Wait 20 seconds to see if water backs up to the shower. If not, turn both screws another 90 degrees and wait 20 seconds again to see if it backs up to shower. Continue this until it backs up to the shower. When it backs up, close each screw equally until it stops backing up.
