Hadn't used my Tascam DR-1 in a couple weeks. Battery appeared to be dead. Used the USB cable to charge off my PC. Still no go, then I realized I had utilized my Blackberry USB rather than the Tascam. Tried plugging the DR-1 with my AC Adapter. Still didn't work, and now the Tascam USB cable isn't doing it either. It won't turn on and it won't take a charge.Have I fried the DR-1? Has the data on my memory card at risk? Could it simply be a damaged battery, which is very new, by the way? Thanks.

From the looks of the port on the side in the manual, all you need is a USB to Mini USB cable, you can also get a Mini USB AC adapter separately or as part of a combo with the cable. Hope that helps. Here's a picture of a Mini USB tip to ensure that it looks correct.
Lean on the power button while it's connected. If no screen appears, do the same while connected to a usb port. It will show if it's charging on the screen. If no display, lean on the power button for 10 seconds while it's plugged in. Still nothing? Buy another for $160 used but get the model that also runs on AC. Also, get a protective case. I'm second guessing that your tascam took a hit or you're using the wrong supply maybe? I thought mine was dead once then I just kept on the power button for about 10 seconds and it came back to life from a deep hibernation.
.I'm going to buy a second battery so I can run it down all the way & charge it back up all the way. The usb charge is healthier for your unit. (Tascam, that is.).
I've had this problem a few times when I haven't used my Zen for a couple of weeks. Even when the unit is powered off it still consumes battery (as the clock continues to work in the background) - so eventually the battery completely dies.
Hook it up to your PC with the USB cable and, if you can see the battery icon and it looks like it's charging, then just leave it for about 1-2 hours (it takes this long to come back to full life - enough to be recognized by your PC, anyway.
If possible, find another USB cable that will fit the connector, as the white USB that comes with the Zen is pretty rubbish and takes forever to charge - I use the mini USB cable that came with my Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 phone and it works a lot better.
I had a similar problem. What i did was to replace the tascam provided cable with another one (similar) from Iriver t30. works wonders. found out that the original cable couldnt plugged in properly to tascam although it did recharge the unit.
Dr Know, doesn't know what he's talking about. I have a LG KF750 and have experienced the same problem.
Solution - Really jam the cable into the socket! The connection is pretty rubbish. The phone charging icon will (with some force and wiggling) appear on screen. Then carefully put it down and don't touch it!
USB charges very slowly, if charging from a dead flat battery it may take a good 20mins of charging to boot up.
P.S. the red camera light is not supposed to come on when charging. Keep wiggling the cable and the light will go off when the phone charging icon appears.
this happened to my dr-1
what i did is took out the SD card, used a card reader to put all the songs from the music folder onto my laptop, then erased the songs from the card, reinserted it into the Dr-1 and no more error.
hope it helps. tascam doesn't come with a card reader, they use a usb but i've found that a card reader is faster and easier to manage. you can get one anywhere they sell electronics for about $15.
