Have a dsl modem and want to add a wireless router to the mix

My ISP is sympatico and I have a desktop hooked up to a speedstream dsl modem. I recently purchased a used lap top and bought a new Linksys Wireless-G router to go with it. How do I connect the wireless to the modem so I can also use the internet on my wireless? I've looked up many instructions and nothing works for me. p.s I'm not an expert at this but I do my best.

Hello...maybe I can help to narrow down the problem.

If you've connected your Linksys to the desktop, and your internet is up and running, your wireless signal should be broadcasting too. However, something might be stopping the laptop from picking up the wireless signal.

To start with, please could you tell us:
    1) What happens when you switch on the laptop and try to connect? Do you see any 'available networks' at all?
    2) Which operating system is running on the laptop?

    Thanks...

There sould be an icon on the botom right of your scren right click it and say view avalibe wirless networks. Then you would find your network and say conect if it is protected by a WEP password it is on the botom or the side of you router.

I can't get my wireless g broadband router to work with my dsl speedstream 5100 modem i can connect to internet when my ethernet cable goes from my xp pc or my mac osx desktop directly to the dsl...

make sure that there is no IP conflict with the two devices. speedstream and wireless G. if both of them have same IP gateway you have to change the IP either one of them for you to have a connection.

Can't access modem from desktop

If your DSL works on PPPOE then you need to setup PPPOE on the 2wire router with the Complete Username and the PAssword for the PPPOW connection, if your DSL works on a Local IP address like 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1 then first check the gateway address of the 2wire Router, if it's in the same IP address range like the DSL Modem like 192.168.1.x the you need to change the Local IP address of the router from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.2.x that should get you up and running with the DSL Modem.

Are you trying to install the router.
You can do it manually without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem
Then you need to connect the computer to the router ad the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

Bright house modem and desktop computer, trying to hook up wireless net gear router for 2nd desktop to get internet? How do I configure the cables?

Connect the lan cable from the dsl modem into the first port on your netgear router ..
make sure your dsl modem is on PPPoE mode so that it autoconnects..
Now just connect to your wireless router via your pc interface..
*Do add a network key to your wireless network to avoid unwanted access

Linksys WRT54G wireless router not compatible with Aztech modem?

Darvin, gotta love your ISP. Never fear......

if it isn't too much of a problem (knowing you have wireless setup done already), then do a factory reset on your router ** remember to copy the WEP Key if you have, or recall the PASS PHRASE so you won't have to reset all wireless devices ** Reset is located on back, you need a ball point pen to reach the reset switch.

Reset process: unplug, take ballpoint pen & insert into reset switch & plug unit back in. Sometimes tricky, but you should notice green light goes to yellow/orange upon resetting.

RESET or NOT - you want the Linksys set for ::

Connection Type - AUTOMATIC (for automatic discovery)
Router IP Address - 192.168.2.1

DCHP - ON, Addresses - 192.168.2.100 and allow 5-50 users
(for security, assign the number of DESKTOP + WIRELESS expected users +1, this way you don't get overrun without knowlege)

Take the cable from Aztech ETHERNET OUT to WAN on Linksys. (usually BLUE) (??) not 100% sure as I have the little silver pocket edition of the same Router. - power cycle (turn both DSL modem & Linksys off for 20 seconds. turn on DSL Modem, wait till it's about as ready as possible, turn on Linksys, should only take 20-30 seconds to power up & recognize.

VERIFY SETTINGS: access router - 192.168.2.1, goto STATUS. you should see IP Addressing, SubNet, DNS1 & DNS2 settings. If you do not, then you have no internet connection.

ALTERNATIVE,

Setup Linksys Router with COnnection Type: PPoE, you will need your ISP assigned ID & Password. Follow all other instructions properly.

Hooking a Linksys wireless router and SpeedStream router together

Connection should be from LAN port of Speedstream going to Internet port of Linksys router. That should be it.
